As a game developer intern, your job is to provide temporary support for the development of video games. In this role, you may work on one or more projects, experience various aspects of being a developer, and otherwise further your learning as a student. Internships in game development almost never last for the entirety of a development project. Creating games often takes years, and interns only work for a few months at most. Some larger companies may shuffle you through games at different stages of development to help you learn more about the changes that occur during the development process. This job title refers specifically to developing video games, but it is possible to find an internship helping create board games instead.
| Aspect | Game Developer Intern | Game Programmer Intern |
|---|---|---|
| Required Skills | Basic programming, game design understanding, teamwork | Strong coding skills, knowledge of programming languages like C++ or C# |
| Work Environment | Collaborative, creative teams in game studios or tech companies | Technical, coding-focused tasks within development teams |
| Typical Employer | Game studios, entertainment companies, tech firms | Game studios, software development companies |
| Common Search Intent | Entry-level game development roles, internship opportunities | Technical programming roles, internship in game coding |
Game Developer Interns typically focus on assisting with game design, testing, and basic development tasks, while Game Programmer Interns concentrate on coding, debugging, and implementing game features. Both roles are entry points into game development but emphasize different skill sets and responsibilities.

Flexible Program Options
IE understands that every service member’s transition looks a little different. That’s why we offer SkillBridge opportunities ranging from 60 to 180 days, depending on your availability and goals. We're continuously expanding our internship offerings and exploring new tracks that align with the skills and experiences of transitioning military members. If you don’t see a program that matches your background, reach out — we may have additional opportunities in development.
While some technical skills may be required depending on the track, what matters just as much is who you are. If you’re someone who takes pride in their work, strives to get better every day, and wants to be part of a team that shares that mindset—we can teach you the rest.
Our SkillBridge program is fast-paced, hands-on, and designed for those ready to hit the ground running. We won’t sugarcoat it: our culture is demanding. But for those with the right attitude, work ethic, and willingness to grow, the opportunities here are wide open.
