Job description

SPECIAL NOTIFICATION: This position is exempt from classified state service and the rules of the Division of Human Resources and the Idaho Personnel Commission. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Wildlife (Habitat) Technician. This position will be located at our C.J. Strike Wildlife Management Area, in Bruneau, Idaho. This is a temporary position and is expected to work up between 32 - 40 hours per week with some weekend work required. A camper may be available if housing is needed.
Dates Needed: This position is expected to occur from September 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026. However, the start and end date have some flexibility.

General Information: The C.J. Strike Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is an 11,008-acre area of mixed ownership bordering the 7,500 surface acres of C.J. Strike Reservoir. The reservoir extends 26 miles up the Snake River and 12 miles up the Bruneau River from C.J. Strike Dam. The WMA and reservoir provide year-round outdoor opportunities of hunting, fishing, camping, boating, wildlife viewing, picnicking, photography, and more. The reservoir is one of the most popular fisheries in southwestern Idaho.
Supplemental Information: Positions in this classification are used for habitat management areas, data management, wildlife management, or wildlife research. Some positions may travel to remote locations for data collection and maintenance activities and may require the physical ability to walk and backpack for several hours; operate four-wheel drive and/or off-road vehicles, and ride horses in rugged terrain; lift and carry up to 65 pounds; and work in extreme weather conditions. Incumbents working on habitat projects may be working with herbicides and pesticides. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Pheasant stocking
  • Operating and maintaining equipment: tractors, ATV, UTV, 4x4 truck, farm implements (mower)
  • Habitat improvement projects
  • Water management
  • Fence maintenance
  • Wildlife and vegetation surveys
  • Noxious weed control
  • Coordinating volunteers
  • Using hand tools and power equipment (chainsaw, power trimmer, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Some knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements.
  • Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing biological data.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Experience operating and performing minor maintenance and upkeep on equipment to include four-wheel drive trucks, off-road vehicles, and/or motorized boats and using small hand and power tools.

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will be self-motivated, able to carry out daily duties with little supervision, and have a strong work ethic. Ability to perform field work in variable weather conditions and rough terrain is necessary.
