Job description

Cytology Tech Prep Assistant

Fulltime 40 hours Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. No Holidays/No Weekends

Responsibilities:

  • Cleans, maintains and troubleshoots the equipment as described in the procedure manual.
  • Prepares body fluids and fine needle aspirate specimens in accordance with procedure manual. Prepares cell block for histological evaluation.
  • Accession patients on the CoPath system to include all clinical and specimen type-related information.
  • Receives specimens and requisitions, correlates patient information and verifies for accuracy and completeness. Must contact physician when necessary data is incomplete.
  • Files slides, reports and file cards.
  • Fixes, stains and coverslips smeared slides in accordance with procedure manual.
  • Prepares solutions as described in procedure manual
  • Prepares and stains liquid based pap specimens as described in the procedure manual.
  • Miniregisters all outpatients on the Invision system which includes demographics.

Education and Formal Training Required:

  • High school graduate with an academic curriculum.

Experience Required:

  • Must have previous experience in a laboratory or physician's office to include staining and coverslipping slides, handling of infectious specimens, laboratory measurements and computer entry experience.
  • Must also be familiar with the computer keyboard.
  • Must be able to learn the practices and procedures required in the work, learn the types of tests performed and laboratory terminology, and use the telephone effectively and give reports or messages clearly and accurately.
