Job description

The Art Gallery Attendant protects the museum's collection, staff, and visitors while at the same time providing world class visitor service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor visitors, staff, vendors, volunteers, and contractors flow through metal detectors at points of entry for potential weapons.
  • Patrols assigned galleries for theft, vandalism, and unruly behavior among visitors. Reports suspicious activity to managers/supervisors as necessary.
  • Examines display cases to determine that they are secure and have not been tampered with or damaged.
  • Warns violators of rule infractions, such as touching works of art, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Watches for and reports irregularities such as damage to art objects, unkept areas requiring the attention of housekeeping, fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors and display cases left unlocked.
  • Observes departing personnel to guard against theft of company property and when directed examines brief cases and bags.
  • Should know the proper names and numbers of different buildings, stairways, elevators, mechanical room, gallery numbers and offices so that they can communicate effectively with the control room when reporting various problems.
  • Assists patrons by answering questions and providing them with information directions.
  • Assists in Emergency situations such as medical and evacuations.
  • Turns lights on and off in galleries at appropriate times.
  • Responds to alarms in display cases quickly and handles them efficiently.
  • Escorts visitors and contractors throughout building when directed.
  • Secures galleries and museum premises when closing. Makes sure all patrons have exited.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); previous experience and/or training preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Employee should have excellent interpersonal skills, be dependable, and maintain a professional appearance. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people in a variety of situations essential. Prior experience using two-way radios and working with alarm systems helpful. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand 8-12 hours per day. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more especially in an emergency situation.

Hourly wage: $19.25
