What is an FX artist?

An FX artist creates visual effects for television shows, commercials, and movies. As an FX artist, your job duties include designing animation, graphics, and motion effects using computer programs, collaborating with artists, illustrators, and animators, conducting research for upcoming projects, creating storyboards, and making edits based on feedback. The qualifications for this career include a bachelor’s degree in animation, fine arts, or graphic design and experience with UX wireframes, Adobe Creative Suite, MAYA, and 3D modeling. You need strong creativity and math skills as well as the ability to work well with a team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FX artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FX Artist, you need a solid understanding of visual effects principles, animation, and 3D art, often supported by a degree in animation, computer graphics, or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard software such as Houdini, Maya, and Adobe After Effects, as well as familiarity with particle and fluid simulation systems, is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and strong collaboration skills help FX Artists deliver high-quality results and work seamlessly within production teams. These competencies are vital for producing visually compelling effects that enhance storytelling and meet the technical demands of film, TV, or game projects.

What are some common challenges FX artists face when working on large-scale productions?

Fx Artists working on large-scale productions often encounter challenges such as managing complex simulations under tight deadlines, ensuring that their visual effects seamlessly integrate with live-action footage or 3D environments, and keeping up with rapidly evolving software and tools. Collaboration is key, as Fx Artists regularly coordinate with animators, lighting, and compositing teams to achieve the desired visual results. Staying organized, adaptable, and proactive in problem-solving are essential skills for overcoming these challenges and delivering high-quality effects on time.

Job description

At Bellota Labs, we're building the future of online poker with ClubWPT Gold - a skill-based, strategy-driven platform from the World Poker Tour. This isn't just another casino app - it's a competitive ecosystem where players learn, train, and play to win real prizes.
We're looking for a Senior / Principal Game Artist to help define the visual identity of our games and player experiences. This role is focused on creating world-class concept art, game assets, UI visuals, environments, characters, FX, and polished production-ready artwork that elevates the player experience across our platform.
This is a high-impact role for an artist who thrives at the intersection of creativity, gameplay, and modern AI-assisted workflows. You'll work closely with product, design, engineering, and leadership teams to shape the visual future of Bellota Labs while helping us ship high-quality content at startup speed.

Design and produce compelling concept art, in-game assets, environments, UI elements, promotional visuals, icons, FX, and other production-ready artwork that aligns with our visual direction and gameplay goals.
Define and evolve the visual style
Help establish and maintain a cohesive art direction across our products, balancing visual polish, readability, performance, and player engagement.
ollaborate cross-functionally
Partner closely with product managers, game designers, engineers, and marketing teams to bring gameplay features and player experiences to life.
Build scalable asset pipelines
Help improve art production workflows and pipelines that allow the team to move quickly without sacrificing quality or consistency.
Leverage AI-assisted creative tools
Use modern AI tools to accelerate ideation, concept exploration, reference generation, iteration, and production workflows. This may include tools such as Midjourney, Firefly, Stable Diffusion, Runway, ChatGPT, and other emerging creative technologies.
Own assets from concept to implementation
Take artwork through the full production lifecycle - from early exploration and concepting through final implementation and polish inside the game engine.
Contribute to player-facing experiences
Create artwork that directly impacts player engagement, retention, immersion, and overall product quality.
Raise the creative bar
Champion artistic excellence and continuously push for higher-quality visuals, stronger visual storytelling, and more polished player experiences.
What We're Looking For:
  • 5+ years of experience in game art, concept art, or digital production art
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality game-ready artwork across multiple styles
  • Expertise in Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, and modern digital art workflows
  • Experience creating in-game assets, environments, UI art, icons, visual effects, and promotional art
  • Strong understanding of composition, color theory, lighting, typography, and visual storytelling
  • Experience collaborating closely with multidisciplinary game development teams
  • Ability to balance creative quality with fast iteration and production timelines
  • Strong communication skills and ability to give and receive creative feedback

AI & Modern Workflow Expectations:
We believe AI-assisted workflows are becoming an important part of modern creative production. We're looking for artists who understand how to use these tools thoughtfully to increase creative exploration and production speed while maintaining strong artistic taste and craftsmanship.
Hands-on experience with AI creative tools is highly valued, including:
