What is a senior FX artist?

Senior FX Artists are experienced professionals who create visual effects (VFX) for films, television, video games, and other digital media. They are responsible for designing, developing, and implementing complex effects such as explosions, fire, water, smoke, and magical phenomena using specialized software like Houdini, Maya, or After Effects. Senior FX Artists often lead or mentor junior team members, work closely with other departments, and ensure that the visual effects meet both artistic and technical standards. Their work is crucial for delivering realistic and visually compelling scenes that enhance storytelling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior FX artist?

To thrive as a Senior FX Artist, you need advanced knowledge of visual effects principles, a strong portfolio demonstrating FX work, and experience with industry-standard software like Houdini, Maya, and After Effects. Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python or MEL) and rendering engines (e.g., Arnold or Redshift) is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other artists and departments set outstanding candidates apart. These skills ensure the creation of high-quality, visually compelling effects that enhance storytelling and meet production deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by senior FX artists when collaborating with other departments on large projects?

Senior FX Artists often work closely with animation, lighting, and compositing teams to ensure visual effects seamlessly integrate with the overall production. One common challenge is aligning creative vision and technical requirements across departments, which may have different workflows and priorities. Effective communication and flexibility are key to addressing feedback and resolving discrepancies in timing, style, or asset compatibility. Senior FX Artists are also expected to anticipate technical constraints and proactively collaborate to find solutions that fit both artistic and production needs.

Senior / Principal Game Artist

Bellota Labs

Redwood City, CA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 8 days ago

Job description

At Bellota Labs, we’re building the future of online poker with ClubWPT Gold — a skill-based, strategy-driven platform from the World Poker Tour. This isn’t just another casino app — it’s a competitive ecosystem where players learn, train, and play to win real prizes.

We’re looking for a Senior / Principal Game Artist to help define the visual identity of our games and player experiences. This role is focused on creating world-class concept art, game assets, UI visuals, environments, characters, FX, and polished production-ready artwork that elevates the player experience across our platform.

This is a high-impact role for an artist who thrives at the intersection of creativity, gameplay, and modern AI-assisted workflows. You’ll work closely with product, design, engineering, and leadership teams to shape the visual future of Bellota Labs while helping us ship high-quality content at startup speed.

What You’ll Do:
Create high-quality game art

Design and produce compelling concept art, in-game assets, environments, UI elements, promotional visuals, icons, FX, and other production-ready artwork that aligns with our visual direction and gameplay goals.

Define and evolve the visual style

Help establish and maintain a cohesive art direction across our products, balancing visual polish, readability, performance, and player engagement.

ollaborate cross-functionally

Partner closely with product managers, game designers, engineers, and marketing teams to bring gameplay features and player experiences to life.

Build scalable asset pipelines

Help improve art production workflows and pipelines that allow the team to move quickly without sacrificing quality or consistency.

Leverage AI-assisted creative tools

Use modern AI tools to accelerate ideation, concept exploration, reference generation, iteration, and production workflows. This may include tools such as Midjourney, Firefly, Stable Diffusion, Runway, ChatGPT, and other emerging creative technologies.

Own assets from concept to implementation

Take artwork through the full production lifecycle — from early exploration and concepting through final implementation and polish inside the game engine.

Contribute to player-facing experiences

Create artwork that directly impacts player engagement, retention, immersion, and overall product quality.

Raise the creative bar

Champion artistic excellence and continuously push for higher-quality visuals, stronger visual storytelling, and more polished player experiences.

What We’re Looking For:
  • 5+ years of experience in game art, concept art, or digital production art
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality game-ready artwork across multiple styles
  • Expertise in Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, and modern digital art workflows
  • Experience creating in-game assets, environments, UI art, icons, visual effects, and promotional art
  • Strong understanding of composition, color theory, lighting, typography, and visual storytelling
  • Experience collaborating closely with multidisciplinary game development teams
  • Ability to balance creative quality with fast iteration and production timelines
  • Strong communication skills and ability to give and receive creative feedback
AI & Modern Workflow Expectations:

We believe AI-assisted workflows are becoming an important part of modern creative production. We’re looking for artists who understand how to use these tools thoughtfully to increase creative exploration and production speed while maintaining strong artistic taste and craftsmanship.

Hands-on experience with AI creative tools is highly valued, including:

  • Midjourney
  • Firefly
  • Stable Diffusion
  • Runway
  • DALL·E
  • ChatGPT
  • Other generative art and ideation tools
Bonus Points
  • Experience working on mobile, social, casino, or live-service games
  • Experience with poker or card-based games
  • Familiarity with Unity or other game engines
  • Motion graphics or animation experience
  • Experience building scalable art pipelines for live products
  • Experience mentoring other artists or helping define visual direction
  • Passion for competitive gaming and player-first experiences
What Success Looks Like:
  • A visually polished and cohesive player experience across ClubWPT Gold
  • High-quality concept art and game assets that elevate gameplay and immersion
  • Efficient art production pipelines that enable rapid iteration and live updates
  • Strong collaboration between art, product, and engineering teams
  • A recognizable and premium visual identity that differentiates Bellota Labs in the gaming market
  • AI-assisted creative workflows that increase speed and experimentation without compromising quality

If you’re excited about building visually compelling gaming experiences, shaping the future of online poker, and working at the intersection of art, gameplay, and emerging creative technologies, we’d love to hear from you.
