What is the difference between Functional Neuroimaging vs Neuropsychologist?
| Aspect | Functional Neuroimaging | Neuropsychologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Advanced degrees in neuroscience or related fields, often with specialized training in neuroimaging techniques | Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in psychology, with specialization in neuropsychology |
| Work Environment | Research labs, hospitals, imaging centers, academic institutions | Clinics, hospitals, private practices, research settings |
| Industry Usage | Primarily in research and clinical studies to visualize brain activity | Assessing and diagnosing cognitive, behavioral, and neurological conditions |
Functional Neuroimaging focuses on using imaging techniques like fMRI and PET scans to visualize brain activity, often in research settings. Neuropsychologists evaluate cognitive functions and diagnose neurological conditions through assessments. While both work within neuroscience, their roles differ in methods and application.
What is functional neuroimaging?
What Are Jobs That Use Functional Neuroimaging?
Jobs that use functional neuroimaging include neurologists and neuropsychologists. Functional neuroimaging is a process that creates images that show activity in parts of the nervous system or brain. As a neurologist or neuropsychologist, you use these images for diagnosis and to develop treatment plans for patients. You analyze brain activity in patients who have brain injuries and mental disorders, using research and patient data to fulfill treatment and care duties. Your responsibilities include interpretation of scans, investigation of brain functions versus mind functions, and developing treatments for brain conditions. In engineer roles, you use technology tools to evaluate and measure brain functions.

Details
The Division of Pediatric Neurology at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an opening for a Pediatric Epileptologist. The physician will provide high-level care, including attending on the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, staffing the outpatient Complex Epilepsy Clinic, as well as providing comprehensive EEG reading services (including surgical epilepsy). Academic expectations further entail active research participation, trainee oversight (pediatric epilepsy fellowship, child neurology trainees, clinical neurophysiology fellows), as well as some component of general child neurology. Clinical duties will comprise ~85% of the individual's time commitment. Clinical activities will take place primarily at Primary Children's Hospital and at Primary Children's Eccles Outpatient Building in Salt Lake City, UT. Epilepsy fellowship training and board certification is required. In addition to clinical care, the faculty member will participate in education and scholarly activity, with opportunities in quality improvement and advocacy.
The division maintains an excellent collegial relationship with our pediatric neurosurgical and neuroimaging colleagues, as well as adult epilepsy programs across the region (both at the University of Utah and through Intermountain Health). The epilepsy section is active in all aspects of epilepsy care, including ketogenic diet, surgical epilepsy, neuromodulation, and gene-related therapies. Beyond this, the division of pediatric neurology provides specialty care in a variety of pediatric and developmental neurological conditions including neuromuscular, vascular disease, movement disorders, headache and functional neuroimaging. Epilepsy remains tightly integrated within a larger, collaborative division in which nearly all pediatric neurology services within the State of Utah (as well as across much of the Intermountain West) are delivered through our group.
Qualified candidates must be Board Eligible/Board Certified in both Pediatrics and Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology. Subspecialty training in pediatric epilepsy is required as well. The selected candidate will receive a faculty appointment in the Department of Pediatrics on the Clinical or Tenure Track at the academic rank commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The Department and University offers a competitive salary and an unmatched benefits program including non-contributory retirement contributions of 20.2% of annual salary that vest immediately. The Department offers a faculty development and mentoring program designed to foster success in translational or basic research, quality improvement engagement, and excellence as educators.
