Job description

Position Title: Tooling Engineer
Location: Williamsport, MD
Reports To: Director of Advanced Manufacturing
Department: Manufacturing
Classification: Exempt, Full-Time
Position Summary
We are seeking a Tool Specialist with strong hands-on CNC experience and a solid understanding of tool and fixture design. This role supports manufacturing by designing, developing, setting up, and maintaining tools and fixtures to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production. The ideal candidate is technically strong, detail-oriented, and eager to learn and grow.
Key Responsibilities
  • Set up CNC machines, including tooling and work offsets, to support production and engineering needs
  • Design, modify, and improve tools, fixtures, and gauges to meet manufacturing and quality requirements
  • Create and revise 2D and 3D drawings and models using AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks
  • Apply basic tool and fixture design criteria such as rigidity, repeatability, tolerance stack-up, ergonomics, and safety
  • Troubleshoot tooling, fixturing, and setup-related issues on the shop floor
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to support new product introductions and process improvements
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on cost, efficiency, and quality
  • Maintain accurate documentation, drawings, and setup procedures
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and company procedures

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • CNC machining experience, including machine setup and offset setup
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks
  • Solid understanding of basic tool and fixture design principles
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Hands-on, practical mindset with strong problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to learn and develop technical skills in tooling and manufacturing
  • Experience with fixturing for CNC milling and/or turning (preferred)
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, cutting tools, and materials (preferred)
  • Experience supporting production environments (high-mix, low-volume or high-volume preferred)

Education and Certification
  • Bachelor's degree (4-year) in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field preferred / Equivalent combination of education and hands-on manufacturing or tooling experience
