Job description

Greenfield Engineering, a Saalex Company is seeking a Journeyman Systems Administrator in Patuxent River, MD to support the Core Avionics Engineering Division (CAED) within NAWCAD.

This role supports the Avionics Engineering Department and Mission Systems Group labs, ensuring secure, reliable operation of lab environments and maintaining Authorization to Operate (ATO) compliance.

Position Type: Full-Time

Salary: $90k-$135k annually (depending on experience)
Work Location: Full-time onsite (see onsite requirements below)

**On-site Requirements: This position is not eligible for reoccurring telework, and will require an onsite presence at Patuxent River NAS for greater than or equal to 90% of the work week.

Position Overview

The Systems Administrator will support lab infrastructure, cybersecurity, and system integration efforts across physical and virtual environments. This role plays a key part in maintaining secure lab operations, supporting test environments, and ensuring compliance with DoD cybersecurity policies.

Essential Functions:

  • Administer & Maintain Systems: Deploy, configure, and maintain Windows/Linux systems, servers, workstations, and virtual environments (VMs/containers), including user access, system updates, and routine maintenance
  • Secure & Harden Infrastructure: Perform ACAS/SCAP scans, apply STIGs, patch vulnerabilities, and maintain system security posture in accordance with DoD policies
  • Support ATO & Compliance: Assist in creating and maintaining ATO accreditation packages (eMASS), continuous monitoring, and cybersecurity documentation
  • Troubleshoot & Support Users: Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues; provide Tier 1-2 support and guidance to lab users and engineers
  • Integrate & Improve Lab Systems: Evaluate, recommend, and integrate new hardware/software solutions into lab and test environments
  • Support Network Operations: Maintain LAN/WAN connectivity and administer network security controls
  • Ensure Continuity & Documentation: Maintain backups, support disaster recovery efforts, and keep system configurations and procedures documented
  • Other duties as assigned or required

Requirements

Required:

  • 3+ years of system administration experience (lab or enterprise environment)
  • CompTIA Security+ certification (required)
  • Experience with:
    • ACAS and vulnerability scanning
    • STIG implementation and security patching
    • Windows and/or Linux administration
    • Network troubleshooting and system monitoring
  • Experience supporting ATO/accreditation processes (eMASS preferred)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently

Desired:

  • Experience in RDT&E or lab environments
  • Familiarity with:
    • Containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
    • DevSecOps practices
    • GitLab
  • Experience integrating hardware/software into test bench environments
  • Formal OS training (Windows/Linux certifications or coursework)

Education:

BS/BA Degree and 3+years of relevant experience OR AA/AS degree and 5+ years of experience, OR HS and 7+ years of experience.

Security Clearance:

Active Top Secret required. Requirements to obtain a clearance include US Citizenship, security investigation, etc.
