What is a full time remote quantum computing job?

Full time remote quantum computing jobs are positions where professionals work exclusively on quantum computing tasks, such as research, algorithm development, or software engineering, from a location outside of a traditional office. These roles typically require a strong background in quantum mechanics, computer science, or related fields, and involve collaborating with teams virtually. Remote quantum computing jobs often exist within tech companies, research institutions, or startups focused on advancing quantum technologies. Employees in these roles use online communication tools to coordinate projects, conduct experiments, and contribute to the growing field of quantum computing.

What are some common challenges faced when working full-time remotely in quantum computing, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in full-time remote quantum computing roles is effective collaboration, as projects often require input from multidisciplinary teams spread across different time zones. To address this, teams typically rely on robust communication tools, regular virtual meetings, and clear documentation to ensure everyone stays aligned. Additionally, staying updated with the rapidly evolving quantum computing landscape can be demanding, so many organizations encourage participation in online seminars and provide access to continuous learning resources. Building a strong remote work discipline and maintaining proactive communication are key to thriving in this environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time remote quantum computing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in a full-time remote quantum computing role, you need a strong background in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, and computer science, often supported by a relevant degree (such as physics, mathematics, or computer science) and practical experience. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (like Qiskit or Cirq), quantum simulators, and cloud-based quantum computing platforms is essential. Standout soft skills include self-motivation, problem-solving, and effective virtual communication for collaborating across distributed teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for advancing complex quantum research and development projects in a remote environment.

What is the difference between Full Time Remote Quantum Computing vs Full Time Remote Quantum Algorithm Developer?

AspectFull Time Remote Quantum ComputingFull Time Remote Quantum Algorithm Developer
Required CredentialsPhysics or Computer Science degree, knowledge of quantum mechanicsComputer Science or Mathematics degree, expertise in quantum algorithms
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, remote work possibleResearch teams, tech firms, primarily remote
Industry UsageQuantum hardware, research institutions, tech companiesQuantum software, algorithm development, research projects

Full Time Remote Quantum Computing roles focus on hardware research and development, requiring physics and engineering expertise. In contrast, Quantum Algorithm Developers specialize in creating algorithms for quantum computers, often with a strong computer science background. Both roles are remote-friendly and operate within the quantum industry, but their core responsibilities and skill sets differ.

At D-Wave, we're helping customers realize the value of quantum computing today and are shaping the quantum-driven industrial and societal advancements of tomorrow.
About the role
D-Wave is seeking an experienced Staff Network Engineer to join our DevOps team. The DevOps team's mission is to provide top-notch platform and production services across the organization. In this role, you'll collaborate with the team to design, implement, and maintain core networking infrastructure, including our production network architecture, network security systems, and network connectivity to remote sites. You will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the reliability, performance, and security of these systems-managing firewalls, monitoring network activity, and promoting best practices such as infrastructure-as-code.
What you'll do
  • Architect, implement, and maintain complex AWS networking environments (VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups)
  • Lead the management of AWS Direct Connect links and Site-to-Site VPNs to remote sites
  • Oversee Cisco on-premise production networking, including hardware/software administration and advanced troubleshooting
  • Design and support Kubernetes networking, including ingress/egress, load balancing, and distribution of BGP services
  • Configure, optimize, and troubleshoot BGP and OSPF routing protocols
  • Collaborate closely with IT and product teams to automate network provisioning and management
  • Mentor junior team members and provide technical leadership in networking
  • Ensure network security, compliance, and best practices across all environments
  • Proactively monitor network performance and resolve complex issues
  • Document network architecture, configurations, and operational procedures

What you'll bring
  • 8+ years of professional experience in network administration (cloud and on-premise)
  • Advanced expertise with AWS networking (VPC, Direct Connect, VPN)
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Cisco networking equipment and protocols
  • Experience with automation and DevOps practices such as infrastructure as code
  • Deep understanding of Kubernetes networking concepts
  • Proven ability to configure and troubleshoot BGP and OSPF
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, and Ansible)
  • Strong collaboration skills and flexibility to work across IT and DevOps teams
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership abilities

Bonus skills
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability platforms (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Familiarity with Cilium CNI
  • Knowledge of Zero Trust networking principles
  • Certifications such as AWS Certified Advanced Networking, Cisco CCNP/CCIE, CKA/CKAD, or Cilium Certified Associate (CCA)
  • Experience with hybrid and multi-cloud networking architectures

A D-Waver's DNA
  • We look at the future and say "why not"; we see possibilities where others see problems or routines. We show the way ahead and are committed to achieving ambitious goals.
  • We practice straight talk and listen generously to each other with empathy. We value different opinions and points of views. We ensure that we connect outside as well as inside to learn from others and inspire each other.
  • We hold ourselves accountable for delivering results. We make decisions & take responsibility so that we can act & support each other.
  • As leaders we motivate & engage our teams to undertake beyond what they originally thought possible, by developing our teams & creating the conditions for people to grow and empower themselves through enabling & coaching.

Our Compensation Philosophy is Simple but Powerful:
We believe providing D-Wavers with company ownership, competitive pay, and a range of meaningful benefits is the start of creating a culture where people want to give the best they've got - not because they're simply making money, but because they've fallen in love with our vision, mission, values, and team.
During the interview process, your Recruiter will review our total rewards (base, equity, bonus, perks, benefit, culture) offerings. The final offer is determined by your proficiencies within this level.
