Job description

The Bao Laboratory in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to support research in protein design, nanobody development, and structural biology.
The Bao Laboratory is advancing the development of engineered protein binders and nanobodies to dissect and modulate membrane-associated signaling and protein aggregation processes relevant to neurodegeneration and cancer. The new Lab Specialist will be responsible for designing, expressing, and purifying recombinant proteins and nanobodies, as well as assisting with biophysical and structural characterization using techniques such as cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), X-ray crystallography, and fluorescence spectroscopy.
This position is essential to sustain the technical innovation, reproducibility, and productivity of our multidisciplinary efforts integrating protein engineering, membrane biochemistry, and structural biology.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree; may accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree.
  • Experience: 1+ year of relevant lab experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in a research laboratory

Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other benchwork and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.
This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

Compensation: The anticipated hiring range is commensurate with education and experience.
