Job description

Position Overview

The Newscast Producer is a dynamic journalist who writes, edits, reports, and curates news across all WRAL platformsโ€”WRAL.com, News+, social media, and television. This position produces TV newscasts and must be proficient in all technical and editorial aspects of that workflow. This role is also responsible for owning and advancing the coverage of multiple stories per day. This position leads the execution of story production throughout the workday, ensuring accuracy, urgency, and creativity across platforms.

This position would provide oversight over content on WRAL.com, WRAL newscasts, WRAL News+ and social media content. The position is structured as a growth opportunity into newsroom leadership roles, including newscast or multiplatform content management.

Essential Job Duties

Content Creation & Story Ownership

  • Produce newscasts which air on WRAL (NBC 5), WRAZ (Fox 50) and our digital platforms.
  • Write, edit, and publish compelling stories for WRAL.com and other platforms, adhering to AP style and newsroom standards.
  • Own the coverage of multiple daily news stories from pitch to publication and promotion, ensuring cohesive treatment across TV, digital, and social.
  • Leverage strong editorial judgment to identify timely, high-impact, and innovative angles for daily news content.
  • Use social listening tools and analytics to discover trending or under-reported stories and tailor content for platform optimization.

Multiplatform Production

  • Produce engaging multimedia content that integrates text, video, graphics, and interactive elements to enhance storytelling.
  • Select and edit visuals, create polls, quizzes, and photo galleries to drive user engagement.
  • Write scripts and rundowns for TV coverage as needed, ensuring clarity, urgency, and creativity in presentation.
  • Provide editorial and production support during live or breaking news, adjusting rundowns and story order in real time.

Digital & Social Strategy

  • Optimize headlines, keywords, and story formats for SEO and social media visibility.
  • Post and manage WRAL content across platforms including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Use audience analytics to inform story framing, placement, and promotion strategies.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with reporters, anchors, photographers, editors, and digital staff to execute content plans effectively.
  • Participate in daily editorial meetings, bringing strong story pitches and production ideas.
  • Coordinate with graphics, video editing, and digital strategy teams to ensure high production quality and visual appeal.

Technical Proficiency & Backup Production

  • Serve as the primary backup for TV newscast production, with deep knowledge of rundown software, production workflows, and live broadcast coordination.
  • Understand newsroom systems including content management systems, video editing platforms (e.g., Adobe Premiere), graphic creation, and automation tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred.
  • 2โ€“4 years of professional newsroom experience with a significant digital and/or television component.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and visual storytelling skills.
  • Strong understanding of digital content production, social media strategy, and audience engagement.
  • Experience using CMS platforms, SEO tools, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media publishing platforms.
  • Ability to multitask in high-pressure environments, respond swiftly to breaking news, and manage competing deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Must be open to working various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Other duties as assigned.
