What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Part 135 Pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Part 135 Pilot, you need an FAA commercial pilot certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings, and typically a minimum number of flight hours as required by the operator. Familiarity with aircraft-specific avionics, scheduling and dispatch systems, and adherence to Part 135 operational regulations are essential. Excellent situational awareness, decision-making under pressure, and strong communication skills with crew, passengers, and dispatchers set top pilots apart. These competencies ensure regulatory compliance, operational safety, and efficient flight operations in a demanding commercial environment.

What is a Full Time Part 135 Pilot?

A Full Time Part 135 Pilot is a professional pilot employed by an aviation operator certified under Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 135, which governs on-demand and commuter flight operations such as charter flights, air taxis, and certain air ambulance services. These pilots are responsible for safely operating aircraft, adhering to strict regulatory and company standards, and often flying various schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays. In addition to flying, they may also handle pre-flight planning, weather assessments, and customer service duties. Full-time status typically means working a set number of hours or on a regular schedule, often with benefits. To qualify, pilots usually need a commercial pilot certificate, instrument rating, and meet specific experience and training requirements as outlined by the FAA and their employer.

What is the difference between Full Time Part 135 Pilot vs Part 91 Pilot?

Employer & Industry UsagePart 135 charter operators, air taxi services

Full Time Part 135 Pilots typically operate on-demand charter flights under Part 135 regulations, requiring specific certifications and training. Part 91 Pilots generally conduct private or corporate flights with different regulatory requirements. While both roles involve piloting aircraft, their work environments and operational rules differ significantly.

What are some unique challenges Full Time Part 135 Pilots face compared to airline pilots?

Full Time Part 135 Pilots often operate in more dynamic environments than airline pilots, flying to a broader range of airports, including smaller or less-equipped locations. This requires greater flexibility, frequent adaptation to varying weather and operational conditions, and the ability to make decisions with less support infrastructure. Additionally, schedules can be less predictable and may include on-call periods or irregular hours. These factors make strong situational awareness and self-reliance essential skills for success in this role.
