Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for an Assistant Golf Superintendent with the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. This position reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment, and does related work as required.
Examples of Duties
  • Mows, irrigates, fertilizes, sprays, and maintains grounds.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment and facilities.
  • Assists in scheduling work activities.
  • Responsible for the orientation and training of new and existing seasonal employees.
  • Assists citizens with requests for information or complaints.
  • Maintains inventories to ensure that materials and supplies are available.
  • Administers and computes time cars for all employees assigned.
  • Prepares personal action reports (PARs) on all personnel and once signed forwards to Human Resources.
  • Prepares purchase orders and maintains credit card logs.
  • Responsible for hiring of seasonal personnel, training, and assignment; transfer or promotion; conducts an annual evaluation of employees and administers disciplinary action, when appropriate.

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of turf maintenance, irrigation system, and general machinery and golf course equipment. Familiarity with chemicals and fertilizers and knowing rates of application/calibration of sprayers. Recognizing the correct mower settings and mowing patterns; being able to make adjustments to cutting heights and cutting quality. Knowledge of the game and rules of golf. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with other city employees and the general public. Must know Microsoft Office Programs.
Education, Certification, and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Two-four-year degree in turf-related field preferred. Golf course experience preferred. Kansas Pesticide Applicator License required or ability to obtain within the first year of employment. Must have previous supervisory experience. A valid Kansas driver's license is required.
Supplemental Information
Environment: Work requires regular contact with dust, noise, poor lighting, hot and cold temps, all types of weather conditions; exposure to hazards. Use of and care of proper safety equipment and procedures to prevent injury. Use of decision making due to use of heavy equipment, hand tools, confined space etc., requiring constant safety considerations in the performance of duties.
Physical Characteristics: Ability to do moderate/heavy physical lifting of 75 pounds and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Equipment/Tools Used:
Equipment: Standard office equipment is used.
Tools: Small hand tools; small engine equipment such as chainsaws, push mowers, etc. Also can use technical field equipment such as Survey Equipment, SCADA, power tools, tractors, roadside mowers, etc.
