Assistant Chief Engineer

Reports To: Chief Engineer

Position Summary

The Assistant Chief Engineer assists the Chief Engineer in the operation, maintenance, repair, and continuous improvement of all hotel buildings, equipment, and mechanical systems. This position helps ensure the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of the resort while maintaining high standards of guest satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and preventative maintenance. The Assistant Chief Engineer serves as the department leader in the Chief Engineer's absence and provides guidance and support to the Engineering team.


Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEngineering Operations
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in overseeing the daily operation of the Engineering Department.
  • Perform and coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance throughout the resort.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair building systems including:
    • HVAC equipment
    • Plumbing systems
    • Electrical systems
    • Refrigeration equipment
    • Boilers and hot water systems
    • Kitchen and laundry equipment
    • Ice machines
    • Water treatment and softening systems
    • Emergency generators
    • Lighting systems
    • Fire and life safety systems
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests from guests and departments.
  • Ensure guest rooms, public areas, meeting spaces, restaurants, and back-of-house areas are maintained to company standards.
  • Participate in renovation projects and capital improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Monitor utility usage and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.

Preventive Maintenance
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ensure equipment inspections are completed on schedule.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, and work orders.
  • Recommend repairs or equipment replacement before failures occur.
  • Assist in maintaining an organized inventory of parts, tools, and maintenance supplies.

Safety and Compliance
  • Promote a safe working environment by ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Follow and enforce Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with fire, life safety, environmental, and health regulations.
  • Immediately report and correct unsafe conditions whenever possible.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures and assist during emergencies including utility outages, severe weather, fire alarms, and other incidents.
  • Ensure engineering work areas, workshops, and storage areas remain clean, organized, and safe.

Leadership
  • Provide daily guidance, training, and support to Engineering staff.
  • Assist with scheduling and assigning work to engineering personnel.
  • Monitor quality of work and ensure repairs are completed properly and efficiently.
  • Communicate effectively with department leaders regarding maintenance priorities and operational concerns.
  • Serve as acting department leader in the absence of the Chief Engineer.

Guest Service
  • Deliver professional, courteous, and responsive service to guests and fellow associates.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Recognize that timely maintenance directly impacts the guest experience and respond accordingly.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or trade school education preferred.
  • Minimum three years of progressive building maintenance or hotel engineering experience preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • HVAC systems
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical systems
    • Refrigeration
    • General building maintenance
  • EPA Certification preferred.
  • New York Fire Safety Director (FSD) certification preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, manuals, and technical specifications.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with guests, managers, contractors, and team members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Basic computer skills including work order management systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Must be available to work days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins as operational needs require.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently stand, walk, climb stairs, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and work in confined spaces.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds independently.
  • Occasionally lift more than 50 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolding, rooftops, and elevated work platforms.
  • Ability to distinguish colors when working with electrical wiring and equipment.
  • Ability to work safely around moving machinery and energized equipment.

Work Environment

Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and temperatures. The position routinely involves exposure to mechanical equipment, electricity, noise, vibration, chemicals, dust, cleaning agents, and other maintenance-related hazards. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.
