Account Specialist – Financial Operations & Public Works Compliance for JERGENSEN CONSTRUCTION INC


Job Overview

  • Project Scope: Civil Construction / Utilities / Sitework (Government or Federal)

The Opportunity

You will take ownership of the day-to-day accounting, payroll, and compliance operations within our office, serving as a pillar of support for our executive and project teams. This role provides direct responsibility over our financial processes, giving you the autonomy to manage critical reporting for public works contracts while ensuring precise payroll execution. Your detail-oriented work will directly safeguard company performance in an environment where your dedication is recognized and valued.


How You Will Make an Impact

  • Oversee daily Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable operations, including vendor invoice entry and customer payment processing.
  • Maintain complete and precise financial records within QuickBooks.
  • Prepare invoices, customer statements, and routine account reconciliations.
  • Process employee payroll accurately, upholding strict deadline schedules.
  • Prepare and submit required payroll documentation directly to the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR).
  • Execute monthly bank and credit card reconciliations.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging reports and actively pursue past-due balances.
  • Generate regular financial summaries and Excel management reports for company leadership.
  • Manage, dispatch, and track electronic contracts and compliance documents via Adobe Acrobat Sign.
  • Assist with year-end reporting, financial audits, and specialized accounting tasks.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • 5 to 10 years of hands-on experience using QuickBooks.
  • Minimum of 5 years of dedicated Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of end-to-end payroll processing experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience preparing and submitting payroll reports to the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and digital document platforms like Adobe Acrobat Sign.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English with exceptional organizational capabilities.
  • Ability to work full-time onsite in Phelan, CA during standard shift hours (7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).


Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Prior accounting or bookkeeping experience within the civil construction, utilities, or heavy highway sectors.
  • Direct background handling certified payroll reports, prevailing wage compliance, or public agency audits.
  • Proven ability to independently investigate, trace, and resolve complex ledger discrepancies.
