Job description

Position Summary
Veltri Steel is seeking an Estimator / Bidder to support estimating, bidding, takeoffs, submittals, detailing coordination, vendor buyout, and project cost tracking. This position plays an important role in reviewing drawings and specifications, preparing quantity takeoffs and cost estimates, coordinating with detailers and design teams, managing vendor pricing, and supporting project teams through buyout and execution.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, able to read construction drawings, comfortable communicating with vendors and contractors, and capable of managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced construction environment. This is a hybrid position which requires in office presence of at least 2-3 days a week.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating and Bidding:
  •  Analyze construction documents, blueprints, drawings, specifications, and project plans. 
  •  Prepare quantity takeoffs, estimates, and cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and services. 
  •  Determine project complexity and identify factors that may influence cost, schedule, labor, equipment, and scope. 
  •  Create labor estimates for projects. 
  •  Identify project equipment and labor needs. 
  •  Fill open time in the weekly schedule with takeoffs and estimating tasks. 
  •  Prepare accurate and complete bid packages. 
  •  Identify scope gaps, exclusions, clarifications, and potential cost risks. 
  •  Develop and maintain relationships with clients, vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, and contractors through project completion. 

Submittals and Design Coordination:
  •  Send drawings to detailers for IFA set preparation. 
  •  Review detailer work for completeness, quality, accuracy, and compliance with project requirements. 
  •  Address detailer questions, comments, and inquiries. 
  •  Send IFA sets to the design team for review and approval. 
  •  Address design team comments, questions, and revisions. 
  •  Manage the detailer and design team process to support timely delivery of IFC sets. 
  •  Prepare IFC sets for buyout. 

Detailing Coordination:
  •  Gather detailing quotes. 
  •  Assist with awarding detailing work based on pricing, schedule, capacity, and ability to meet project requirements. 
  •  Hold detailers accountable to completion dates and project deadlines. 
  •  Communicate clearly with detailers to resolve issues and maintain progress. 

Buyout and Vendor Management:
  •  Break IFC drawing sets out by material and scope. 
  •  Manage bids from vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors. 
  •  Compile, compare, and record vendor findings. 
  •  Support buyout decisions based on pricing, lead times, availability, and scope coverage. 
  •  Maintain organized records of vendor quotes, clarifications, and award recommendations. 

Quantity Takeoff, Cost Codes, and Budget Tracking:
  •  Compile and record work quantities and budget revenue. 
  •  Compile and record actual costs and budget costs. 
  •  Support project cost-code tracking. 
  •  Assist with comparing estimated costs to actual project costs. 
  •  Maintain organized estimating and cost records.

Qualifications
Required:
  •  High school diploma or equivalent. 
  •  Bachelor degree preferred.
  •  Ability to read and understand construction drawings, specifications, and project documents. 
  •  Strong attention to detail and accuracy. 
  •  Strong organizational and follow-up skills. 
  •  Ability to manage multiple bids, deadlines, and priorities. 
  •  Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  •  Ability to work with clients, vendors, suppliers, contractors, and internal project teams. 
  •  Intermediate computer skills and ability to maintain organized digital records. 

Preferred, but Not Required:
  •  2+ years of construction estimating experience. 
  •  Experience with steel, miscellaneous metals, structural steel, or commercial construction. 
  •  Experience preparing quantity takeoffs. 
  •  Experience coordinating with detailers, suppliers, fabricators, vendors, and design teams. 
  •  Familiarity with cost codes, buyout, submittals, RFIs, IFC drawings, and IFA drawing sets. 
  •  Experience using estimating, takeoff, construction management, or spreadsheet software.
