Bankruptcy Attorney (Debtor Representation)

New York, NY or White Plains, NY | Full-Time

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Bankruptcy Attorney with a proven portable book of business to join a well-established and growing bankruptcy practice. This opportunity is ideal for a seasoned attorney who has extensive experience representing debtors in sophisticated bankruptcy and restructuring matters and is looking to expand their practice with the support of a collaborative, full-service law firm.

The successful candidate will manage a diverse portfolio of bankruptcy and insolvency matters while continuing to grow client relationships and business development efforts. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced attorneys handling complex commercial bankruptcy, corporate restructuring, workouts, and insolvency proceedings.

Responsibilities:
  • Represent debtors in complex Chapter 11 reorganizations, Chapter 7 proceedings, and other bankruptcy and insolvency matters.
  • Advise businesses, lenders, creditors, and stakeholders on bankruptcy strategy, restructuring, workouts, and financial reorganizations.
  • Manage all phases of bankruptcy litigation and contested matters from inception through resolution.
  • Prepare and argue motions before the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, including motions related to cash collateral, stay relief, asset sales, plan confirmation, and claim objections.
  • Draft and negotiate restructuring agreements, forbearance agreements, workout agreements, and bankruptcy-related transactions.
  • Counsel clients on insolvency issues, creditor rights, debtor rights, bankruptcy risk management, and strategic alternatives.
  • Represent clients in adversary proceedings, contested matters, mediations, and settlement negotiations.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships while continuing to expand an established book of business.
  • Collaborate with attorneys across corporate, commercial litigation, real estate, and finance practice groups to provide comprehensive client solutions.
  • Mentor junior attorneys and contribute to the continued growth of the bankruptcy practice.
Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with the New York State Bar.
  • Significant experience representing debtors in complex bankruptcy and restructuring matters.
  • Demonstrated experience handling Chapter 11 reorganizations, bankruptcy litigation, insolvency, and creditor-debtor matters.
  • Established portable book of business required.
  • Strong experience appearing before U.S. Bankruptcy Courts and managing contested proceedings.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, negotiation, and courtroom advocacy skills.
  • Strong business development experience with a demonstrated ability to originate and maintain client relationships.
  • Ability to independently manage a sophisticated bankruptcy practice while collaborating within a team-oriented environment.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience representing middle-market businesses, closely held companies, and high-net-worth individuals in bankruptcy and restructuring matters.
  • Experience with commercial finance, secured transactions, UCC matters, and distressed asset acquisitions.
  • Experience handling complex workouts, receiverships, and out-of-court restructurings.
  • Leadership experience mentoring junior attorneys or leading client teams.
  • Established relationships within the New York business, financial, or legal communities.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and the size of the candidate's portable book of business.
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Business development incentives.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Opportunity to join a collaborative, entrepreneurial legal team with a strong platform for practice growth.
