How much do full time ballistics engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for full time ballistics engineer in the United States is $106,386.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $76,000.00 and $132,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Ballistics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Ballistics Engineer, you need a solid background in physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with simulation software like ANSYS, CAD tools, and knowledge of ballistics testing standards are typically required, along with certifications in safety protocols. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help set candidates apart. These skills ensure precise design, testing, and evaluation of ballistic systems, leading to safe and reliable performance in defense and aerospace applications.

What is the difference between Full Time Ballistics Engineer vs Part Time Ballistics Engineer?

AspectFull Time Ballistics EngineerPart Time Ballistics Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, physics, or related field; certifications may include ballistic testing or engineering licensesSame as full-time, often with less emphasis on certifications due to part-time nature
Work EnvironmentFull-time, in labs, testing facilities, or on-site at manufacturing plantsFlexible, may work remotely or on a project basis at various locations
Industry UsageCommon in defense, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors requiring continuous testingUsed for specific projects or consulting roles within the same industries

Full Time Ballistics Engineers typically work full-time in dedicated facilities, focusing on ongoing testing and research. Part Time Ballistics Engineers may work on specific projects or consulting roles, offering flexibility but with similar credentials and industry applications.

What are the top 3 highest paid engineers?

In general, the highest paid engineering roles include petroleum engineers, computer hardware engineers, and aerospace engineers. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, with specialized fields and advanced certifications often commanding higher pay. Full-time ballistics engineers, for example, typically earn competitive salaries within defense and aerospace sectors, especially with specialized skills and security clearances.

How much do ballistics engineers make?

Ballistics engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Advanced skills in modeling, testing, and familiarity with firearms or missile systems can lead to higher compensation, especially in defense or aerospace industries.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Full-time ballistics engineers typically do not earn $500,000 annually; such high salaries are more common in executive, specialized consulting, or senior leadership roles within engineering fields. Highly experienced engineers in niche areas or those in managerial positions at large defense or aerospace companies may reach this level, especially with advanced skills and security clearances.

What are Full Time Ballistics Engineers?

Full Time Ballistics Engineers are specialized engineers who focus on the science of projectile motion and the behavior of objects in flight, such as bullets, missiles, or other projectiles. They typically work full-time for organizations involved in defense, aerospace, law enforcement, or sporting goods industries. Their responsibilities include designing, testing, and analyzing munitions, weapons systems, and safety features. Ballistics engineers apply principles of physics, mathematics, and materials science to improve performance, accuracy, and safety of ballistic products. They may also be involved in forensic investigations and research to advance ballistics technology.

What are some typical challenges a Ballistics Engineer faces when working on new ammunition or weapon system projects?

Ballistics Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing performance requirements with safety and regulatory standards, managing tight development timelines, and integrating emerging materials or technologies. They frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical engineers, materials scientists, and manufacturing specialists, to ensure all aspects of ballistics performance are optimized. Adapting to evolving defense industry needs and staying current with advancements in simulation and testing methodologies are also essential parts of the role.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior ballistic engineers or specialized aerospace engineers with extensive experience, advanced degrees, and expertise in areas like weapon systems or defense technology can earn $300,000 or more annually. High salaries are often associated with roles requiring advanced skills, certifications, and security clearances in defense or aerospace industries.
