What is a full stack developer?

Full Stack developers are professionals who have the skills to work on both the front-end and back-end parts of web applications. This means they can handle the user interface, server-side logic, databases, and even deployment processes. They are versatile and can work with a variety of programming languages and frameworks, making them valuable assets to software development teams. Full Stack developers often collaborate closely with designers, other developers, and stakeholders to build and maintain complete, functional products.

How do full stack developers typically balance working on both front-end and back-end tasks within a project?

Full Stack Developers often split their time between front-end and back-end responsibilities based on the project's current needs. In agile or collaborative environments, they may focus on developing user interfaces one week and optimizing server-side logic or databases the next. Effective communication with team members—such as designers, product managers, and other developers—is key to prioritizing tasks and ensuring smooth handoffs between layers. This flexibility allows Full Stack Developers to gain a holistic view of the application and contribute to multiple stages of the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web development principles. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Angular, Node.js), databases (SQL/NoSQL), version control (Git), and knowledge of deployment tools or cloud services are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication set exceptional Full Stack Developers apart. These skills are vital for efficiently building, deploying, and maintaining complete web applications while collaborating across technical and non-technical teams.

What is the difference between Full Stack vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack DeveloperFront End Developer

Work EnvironmentWorks on both client-side and server-side development, often involved in full project lifecycleFocuses on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience
Industry UsageCommon in startups, small teams, and full project development rolesPrimarily in web development agencies, UI/UX teams, and front end-focused projects

Full Stack Developers have a broad skill set covering both front end and back end development, enabling them to handle entire projects. Front End Developers specialize in creating engaging user interfaces. The choice depends on project scope and team needs.

Is full stack a good career?

Full stack development is a viable career choice due to high demand for professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side languages. It offers opportunities for growth, versatility, and competitive salaries, especially for those who continuously update their skills and gain experience with frameworks and tools like React, Node.js, and databases.

Is full stack still in demand?

Full stack developers are currently in high demand due to their ability to work on both front-end and back-end development, with skills in frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and databases. The role remains essential in many industries, and demand is expected to grow as companies continue to prioritize versatile developers who can handle multiple aspects of software development.

What are full-stack jobs?

Full-stack jobs involve working with both the front-end (user interface) and back-end (server, database) of web applications. These roles typically require knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side technologies, as well as familiarity with frameworks and tools used in software development. Full-stack developers often collaborate across teams to build, maintain, and improve complete web solutions.

Job Title: Full Stack Engineer Location-Type: Remote (PST / MST / CST timezones; overlap with Australia required, especially in the first few months) Start Date: ASAP Duration: Permanent Compensation Range: $160,000 - $190,000 Benefits: Equity grant (10% of salary, 5-year vesting schedule); Eligible for Health, Dental, Vision, and 401K, PTO Visa Sponsorship: Not eligible for visa sponsorship Job Description:
  • The client is seeking a senior full-stack engineer to own and drive backend services, APIs, and platform architecture across a fast-growing, IoT-powered retail media network scaling to tens of thousands of locations.
Job Summary
  • Build and maintain backend services and APIs using Python and Django, supporting real-time device fleet management across thousands of retail locations.
  • Design and architect scalable solutions for high-volume, public-facing systems, including multi-database routing, async processing pipelines, and near-real-time control of a large device fleet.
  • Translate loose product requirements into technical designs and task breakdowns, leveraging AI tooling (such as Claude Code) to move from PRD to implementation plan.
  • Develop integrations with third-party advertising and display platforms, contributing to ad-tech functionality around audio and display targeting.
  • Collaborate with the product team to define roadmap priorities, surface risks early, and communicate technical decisions clearly to business stakeholders.
  • Contribute frontend development in React and TypeScript as needed, supporting the full-stack nature of the role.
  • Operate autonomously in a fast-paced startup environment, generating your own tickets, owning work end to end, and supporting new customer onboarding and platform expansion.
Minimum Requirements:
  • 7 or more years of full-stack engineering experience, with a backend-leaning but genuinely full-stack profile (Python and Django on the backend, React on the frontend).
  • Demonstrated production experience with Django and Django REST Framework building large, public-facing APIs at scale.
  • Experience owning and delivering complete features or systems end to end, with a clear record of technical leadership and autonomous decision-making.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows (such as Claude Code or similar), with the ability to direct, verify, and take accountability for AI-generated output.
  • Strong engineering judgment, with the ability to decompose ambiguous requirements, reason about failure modes, and right-size solutions without close oversight.
  • Experience working in startup or high-growth environments where engineers are expected to wear multiple hats and operate with limited process.
  • Multicultural or global team experience, particularly with distributed teams across time zones.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Background in retail media, ad-tech, or digital out-of-home advertising platforms.
  • Experience with IoT, distributed fleet management, or systems managing large numbers of connected devices.
  • Familiarity with AWS cloud infrastructure and async or queue-based processing architectures.
  • Exposure to Elixir or other languages common in polyglot engineering environments.
