What is a full stack software developer?

A full stack developer understands the entire “stack” or layers of programming within software technology. For this job, you should be familiar with all areas of software development and how they interact with other platforms. Your responsibilities include the development of front-end and back-end coding, an understanding of different servers, networks, and hosting environments, how to use application program interfaces (API), and managing quality assurance. Education requirements for this career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Jobs as a full stack software developer are a good foundation for a career in IT.

What is a full stack software developer?

A Full Stack Software Developer is a professional who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. This means they can work on the user interface and experience (front-end), as well as the server, database, and application logic (back-end). Full Stack Developers are often proficient in multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to build complete web or software applications from start to finish. Their versatility makes them valuable in teams that require a broad range of technical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software developer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Developer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of software development principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, server-side technologies like Node.js or Django, version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is highly valued, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving, effective communication, and collaboration skills help you stand out in multidisciplinary teams and dynamic environments. These capabilities are essential for building robust, scalable applications and ensuring smooth project delivery across the software development lifecycle.

How does a full stack software developer typically collaborate with designers and other team members during a project?

Full Stack Software Developers often work closely with UI/UX designers, backend engineers, and product managers throughout the development process. They participate in planning sessions to understand design requirements, provide technical feedback, and help translate user interface mockups into functional features. Regular meetings and collaborative tools are usually employed to ensure alignment and smooth communication, making it essential for developers in this role to be proactive and open in sharing progress or challenges. This cross-functional teamwork helps deliver cohesive, user-friendly applications that meet business objectives.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Developer vs Front End Developer?

Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire application stacksFocuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teamsPrimarily involved in UI/UX design and front-end feature implementation

The main difference between a Full Stack Software Developer and a Front End Developer lies in their scope of work. Full Stack Developers handle both front-end and back-end development, enabling them to build complete applications. Front End Developers focus solely on creating engaging user interfaces. Your choice depends on whether you prefer working across the entire tech stack or specializing in user-facing features.

Is a full stack software developer still in demand?

Full stack software developers are currently in high demand due to their versatility in working with both front-end and back-end technologies. Skills in frameworks like React, Node.js, and cloud platforms increase employability, and demand is expected to remain strong as digital transformation continues across industries.

Job description

Software Developer - Full Stack
Location: Grace Company - Salt Lake City Area, Utah
Job Type: Full Time, On Site Only
This is a 100% on site position. Remote and hybrid work are not available for this role.
About Us
Grace Company is a leader in the quilting and sewing industry, committed to delivering innovative solutions that enhance creativity and craftsmanship. Our cutting edge technology helps turn ideas into reality, and we foster a collaborative environment where creativity and technical excellence are valued and encouraged.
"Our mission is to empower people to connect with their passions, unleash their creativity, and enrich their lives and the lives of others by providing quality experiences and innovative solutions."
Our software engineers work closely with mechanical, electrical, firmware, manufacturing, product development, and testing teams to create complete products that combine software and physical hardware.
Position Description
We are looking for a Full Stack Software Developer to help design, build, and scale modern software for current and future Grace Company products.
This is a product focused role where you will have opportunities to work across front end applications, backend services, databases, cloud systems, and hardware integration. Our software directly interacts with physical products, giving our developers the opportunity to see their work move from an idea to a real product being used by customers.
You will be part of a small, high impact engineering team building new products and systems from the ground up. Your decisions will directly influence architecture, performance, scalability, and user experience.
This position requires working on site with our engineering and product development teams. It is not a remote or hybrid position.
What You'll Work On
  • Build and maintain modern applications across front end and backend systems
  • Develop intuitive user interfaces for desktop, tablet, mobile, and web applications
  • Develop backend services, APIs, databases, and cloud connected systems
  • Build software that communicates with physical products and embedded hardware
  • Work with technologies such as Flutter/Dart, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, and other modern development frameworks
  • Design systems that connect applications, cloud services, databases, and hardware devices
  • Build interactive graphical interfaces and tools
  • Improve application performance, reliability, responsiveness, and scalability
  • Collaborate directly with mechanical, electrical, firmware, manufacturing, QA, and product teams
  • Participate in architecture decisions and long term technical direction
  • Prototype new concepts and help determine the best technologies for future products
  • Turn real customer problems into clean, intuitive software solutions
Core Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain full stack software applications
  • Build scalable front end and backend architectures
  • Develop and integrate REST APIs and real time communication systems
  • Design and work with databases and data models
  • Integrate software with hardware and embedded systems
  • Debug complex issues that may cross software, firmware, hardware, and network boundaries
  • Optimize application performance across different devices and environments
  • Participate in code reviews and architecture discussions
  • Contribute to automated testing, CI/CD, QA, and release processes
  • Participate in feature planning, user story development, prototyping, and product testing
  • Improve UI/UX through testing, feedback, and iteration
  • Work directly with other engineering disciplines throughout the product development process
  • Help establish scalable software practices as our products and development teams grow
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • 2+ years of professional software development experience
  • Experience developing both front end and backend software
  • Strong understanding of software development fundamentals, data structures, application architecture, and debugging
  • Experience building desktop, mobile, web, or cross platform applications
  • Experience developing or integrating REST APIs
  • Experience working with databases
  • Experience with Git and modern version control workflows
  • Ability to learn new languages, frameworks, and technologies as product needs evolve
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills
Front End Development
Experience with one or more modern application technologies or frameworks, such as:
  • Flutter / Dart
  • React
  • JavaScript / TypeScript
  • .NET
  • Native mobile or desktop development
  • Similar modern frameworks

  • Java
  • Similar backend technologies

Experience with:
  • REST APIs
  • Database driven applications
  • Authentication and user accounts

  • Bluetooth / BLE
  • USB or serial communication
  • Embedded systems
  • Firmware communication
  • Real time systems
  • Device protocols
  • Motion control

  • Wants to work directly with the products and people they are developing software for

Because our software is tightly connected to physical products, this role works on site with our engineering team and hardware. Remote and hybrid arrangements are not available for this position.
Why This Role Is Different
At Grace Company, software development is part of the complete product development process.
You may spend one day developing an application interface, another working on backend architecture, and another testing software directly on a new piece of hardware with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers.
Our developers have the opportunity to influence products from early prototypes through production and see customers use the systems they helped create.
This is an on site engineering role designed for someone who enjoys collaborating directly with a multidisciplinary product development team.

  • Competitive salary
  • 2 weeks PTO
  • Accrued sick/personal time beginning after 1 year of employment
  • 7 paid holidays including 2 of your choice
  • Simple IRA with a 3% company match
