Job description

JOB TITLE: FUEL TAX MANAGER
LOCATION: Tempe, AZ (In-Office, 5 days per week)
COMPANY: Circle K Shared Services DEPARTMENT: Tax
REPORTS TO: Senior Tax Manager/Director FLSA STATUS: Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY:
Manage and provide leadership and support to the onshore and offshore fuel tax team members in the calculation, filing and payment of the monthly fuel tax returns. Manage entire fuel tax compliance function to result in timely filing as well as engage in journal entry calculations/filing, General Ledger reconciliations and SOX narratives. Actively engage in fuel tax planning and process improvement. Manage the fuel tax audit function and conduct detailed research and analytical functions to solve fuel tax issues while working closely with the Fuel Accounting Dept to amend returns and remit any outstanding fuel tax amounts. Support and manage company goals by focusing on personal accountability, customer service, management, and leadership.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Manage fuel tax onshore and offshore team in the preparation and filing of all fuel excise tax returns, related schedules, and related reports for Federal, State, and Local tax jurisdictions.
  • Manage/prepare and/or approve General Ledger balance sheet account and tax expense account reconciliations on a fiscal period basis.
  • Manage fuel tax audits, works closely with the Fuel Tax Accounting Team to gather audit data as well as interface and correspond with Federal, State, and Local fuel tax auditors.
  • Manage teams research and response to tax notices and issues.
  • Manage and maintain accounting controls by drafting/following SOX procedures and maintain financial security by following internal controls.
  • Respond to tax questions from internal and external sources by researching and interpreting appropriate Federal, State, and/or Local tax regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with requirements, policies and regulations by enforcing adherence to corporate systems, policies and government regulations, rendering opinions and advising management on needed actions.
  • Stays current on fuel excise tax laws and regulations, tax rates and accounting rules through timely research, attending educational workshops, and reading professional publications and tax notifications; communicates changes to internal groups; and ensures proper implementation of changes as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Undergraduate accounting degree required.
  • Five to seven years of fuel excise tax and/or sales/use tax experience.
  • Experience representing company in audits preferred.
  • Must be highly organized with strong follow-through and follow-up skills.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate with external customers, internal management, and team.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • General ledger accounting experience preferred.
  • Must be computer literate in Excel and Word. Advanced Excel experience required.
  • Experience with PDI and Avalara a plus.
