Department
College of Social Sciences and Public Policy - Department of Geography
Responsibilities
  • Advisor for 3 graduate programs (Masters of Geographic Information Science, Masters of Geography, PhD in Geography) and 1 combined Bachelors/Master's Pathways Program. Includes: informing students of academic policies and procedures and program requirements, monitoring student progress through GST and Student Central responding to student inquiries, academic progress checks, class scheduling, course exceptions, Global exchange paperwork, SAP appeals, probation advising.
  • Maintains student files and advising notes in Departmental and College shared drives and Campus Connect. Creates semester list of course offerings. Monitors course enrollment. Oversees graduate enrollment of departmental courses: DIS, Defenses, Preliminary Exams, Internships, Research, Honors Work. Maintains Graduate Student Handbook.
  • Builds and coordinates semester course schedule for the department including assigning rooms. Distributes schedule to faculty. Manages registration issues including adding students to closed courses and during closed enrollment periods, override time conflict and class permission. Back-up for first day attendance policy and entering grades.
  • Corresponds with Academic Dean's and Registrar's office. Completes Graduate level Preliminary and Graduation Clearances. Facilitates time extension requests, grade changes, retroactive adding/dropping of course hours. Maintains departmental academic forms.
  • Coordinates graduate student recruitment and admissions. Uses and updates SLATE system. Liaison to Graduate school and Department of Admissions. Responds to prospective student inquiries. Makes changes to student's applications where applicable. Screens applications for completion and minimum requirements. Calculates Upper Division GPAs and creates comparison of individual application admissions information. Approves GRE Waivers.
  • Manages graduate assistant-ships. Collects graduate student appointment information. Working with departmental administrative specialist, prepares and distributes graduate student job offers and letters of appointment and reappointment. Processes tuition waivers and monitors student financial awards. Sends waiver receipts to appointed students.
  • Collaborates with Chair, Grad & Undergrad directors, and committees to enhance academic programs. Complies data for student awards at request of the department. Liaison to the college, internal and external departments, and institutions and agencies throughout the nation regarding academic affairs. Prepares regular and requested reports through BI and Student Central. Compiles and interprets data at request of the Chair, Grad & Undergraduate directors.

Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)
