Job Description:

Principal Faculty Physician Assistant Program

Frostburg State University seeks qualified applicants for a Principal Faculty member for our fully accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program in Hagerstown, Maryland. This is a 12-month contract (annual renewal) position as a full-time, tenure-track faculty member with the rank of Assistant Professor and associated teaching responsibility. Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications and benefits package includes University System of Maryland (USM) health care benefits, professional development funds, and tuition remission.

The PA Program is in the Department of Physician Assistant Medicine (DPAM) and the College of Education, Behavioral and Health Professions (CEBHP). Given the mission of the program and institution, we encourage prospective candidates with the following experience to apply:

  • demonstrated commitment to advancing health and wellness, research, systems-innovation, or practice experience for/with underserved areas/populations,
  • leadership (formal or informal) related to health equity, with welcomed diversity of perspective and approaches, and

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Contribute meaningfully as a faculty role model providing graduate-level education in the PA program through Teaching and related roles.
  • Participate in Service activities that support the mission of the program, department, and institution, including committees, professional organization involvement or leadership.
  • Engage in ongoing Professional Development and scholarly works to maintain and/or advance personal/career growth, the profession, program and/or institution, research knowledge, evidence-based practice, and interprofessional education.
  • Meet and maintain the requirements of a faculty member*, described in the FSU Faculty Handbook and located on the institution's website.
  • In the PA program, Principal Faculty maintain responsibility for the following (ARC-PA Standards, 6th edition, Sept 2025) (A2.05):
    • developing, reviewing, and revising as necessary the program's mission statement, goals, and competencies
    • selecting applicants for admission to the PA program
    • providing student instruction
    • evaluating student performance
    • academic counseling of students
    • assuring the availability of remedial instruction
    • designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the curriculum
    • evaluating the program

*Note: Principal faculty hold academic appointments and privileges comparable to other faculty with similar academic responsibilities within the institution (A2.04).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Physician Assistant/Associate
    • Master's degree from an accredited PA program, or its equivalence if, including terminal degree at the time of completion.
    • Current license, unencumbered
    • Current board certification - NCCPA certified or emeritus
  • Physician
    • Degree from an accredited medical school
    • Current license, unencumbered, as an osteopathic or allopathic physician
    • Current or previously board-certified
  • Other Healthcare Professionals
    • Terminal degree from a health professions-related program (Master's level or Doctoral degree)
    • Current license, unencumbered
    • Current board certification
  • Non-Clinical Professionals
    • Terminal degree from a related field to health professions education, graduate medical education, or related focus.
    • Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, EdD)

Other requirements:

  • Prior teaching experience in higher education or other relevant experience that demonstrates an ability to provide complex or rigorous instruction with associated assessment measures, even if occurring in non-traditional settings
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills - oral and written.
  • Demonstrated history of leadership, advocacy, and administrator-related effectiveness.
  • General knowledge and understanding of the PA profession and associated practice.
  • Collaboration and appreciation for team-based approaches are evident in prior practice, work, or research activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of relevant experience (clinical or non-clinical) working in/with underserved areas/populations, rural areas, or other related experiences supporting or linking to the program's and/or institution's mission;
  • Teaching in higher education and/or administrative experience in academia, PA education, or a related field;
  • Knowledge of PA program administration, organization, operations, curriculum, evaluation, and accreditation.
  • Professional interest in and consistent works related to research or scholarly activities that relate to the faculty role, the program's mission, or the betterment of population.
  • Participation/leadership in local, state, regional, or professional national organizations.
