What Does a Front End Manager Do?

As a Front End Manager, your main duties and responsibilities will focus on overseeing the public areas of a retail store. This includes training and managing your sales staff, directing the physical layout and display presentation of the sales floor, and meeting with customers and serving their needs. Everything from the initial impression of the store to customer engagement with merchandise depends on the setting you establish. You might make inventory decisions determined, in large part, by the feedback you receive. Store profit and loss can depend heavily on your decisions regarding merchandising, store aesthetics, and customer service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Front End Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Front End Manager, you need experience in retail operations, supervisory skills, and knowledge of cash handling procedures, usually supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, scheduling software, and inventory management tools is typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and excellent customer service skills help you effectively manage staff and address customer concerns. These skills and qualities are important to ensure efficient store operations, high team morale, and a positive customer experience.

What are some common challenges faced by Front End Managers in maintaining team efficiency and customer satisfaction?

Front End Managers often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as ensuring smooth checkout operations, managing cashier schedules, and resolving customer concerns promptly. A major challenge is balancing staff coverage during peak hours while maintaining high morale and productivity. Additionally, they must address unexpected issues like register malfunctions or customer disputes efficiently, all while upholding store policies and delivering excellent service. Effective communication and adaptability are key for overcoming these challenges and fostering a positive work environment.

What are Front End Managers?

Front End Managers are responsible for overseeing the customer-facing operations of a retail store, particularly the checkout and service areas. They supervise cashiers, handle customer inquiries or complaints, ensure efficient workflow at registers, and maintain a positive shopping experience for customers. Front End Managers also manage staff scheduling, train new employees, and ensure compliance with store policies and procedures. Their role is crucial in maintaining smooth, efficient, and courteous service at the store's front end.

Job description

Your Impact on our Mission

Zocdoc's most important asset is our people. As an Engineering Manager of our Frontend Platform & Mobile team, you'll play a central role in defining how millions of patients and providers experience Zocdoc - starting from the foundation. You'll lead the engineering effort behind our accessible React component library and design system: the shared frontend infrastructure that every product team at Zocdoc depends on to ship fast, inclusive, and polished experiences across web and mobile. You'll partner closely with UX, Product, and Engineering leaders to drive adoption, accelerate frontend and mobile development organization-wide, and establish accessibility as a first-class engineering discipline. Your leadership will improve the speed and quality of how we build - and ultimately, the experience of every patient who relies on Zocdoc to find care.

You'll enjoy this role if you are...

  • Passionate about frontend development - React, design systems, accessibility, and mobile - and energized by building infrastructure that multiplies the output of every other engineering team
  • The kind of engineering leader who loves building platforms that others build on, and finds deep satisfaction in driving adoption across an organization
  • Committed to making accessibility a standard, not an afterthought, and excited to establish the processes that raise the bar company-wide
  • Drawn to building inclusive, psychologically safe teams where engineers grow, belong, and do their best work
  • A data-driven thinker who brings evidence to decisions and holds a high quality bar without sacrificing speed
  • Serious about your work, but not about yourself. Let's face it - the way things are going, you kind of need a sense of humor

Your day to day is...

  • Leading, managing, and growing a high-performing team of frontend engineers focused on design systems, accessible component libraries, and frontend platform tooling
  • Owning the strategy and roadmap for Zocdoc's design system and accessible React component library, ensuring it is the preferred foundation for feature development across all product teams
  • Driving accessibility across Zocdoc's web and mobile surfaces - establishing planning, build, and QA processes so accessible product development becomes a consistent, measurable standard
  • Partnering with UX, Product, and Engineering to build and evolve a scalable, accessible, mobile-responsive component library that works seamlessly across web and native mobile platforms
  • Identifying and delivering platform improvements that meaningfully speed up frontend and mobile development across the engineering organization
  • Partnering with Product, UX, and Analytics to research and prioritize roadmaps and set a clear technical direction
  • Mentoring and coaching engineers at all levels to deliver outstanding work in React.js and related frontend and mobile technologies
  • Working with cutting edge GenAI tools and technology to accelerate development velocity, improve engineering workflows, and raise the bar on what the team can ship
  • Setting technical strategy with a focus on scalability, developer experience, and ease of contribution across teams
  • Contributing to Engineering Culture at Zocdoc - helping shape career ladders, supporting cross-team events, interviewing, and building a more inclusive technology workforce

You'll be successful in this role if you have...

  • Proven leadership experience shared UI infrastructure as a product: ship design system as a reliable cross-platform foundation, drive migration and adoption across web and mobile teams, and institutionalize accessibility, instrumentation, and quality as defaults.
  • The right person combines strong frontend platform judgment and cross-functional influence, and enough mobile fluency to unify web/iOS/Android direction without making any one client platform the center of gravity.
  • 5+ years of experience building and shipping software, with a strong foundation in frontend technologies (React, TypeScript, JavaScript) and demonstrated experience in mobile development ( iOS or Android)
  • 2+ years of experience leading, growing, and inspiring engineering teams
  • Experience building or significantly contributing to a design system or shared component library used across multiple product teams
  • A history of building polished, well-tested, accessible consumer products on web and mobile
  • The ability to integrate generative AI tools into daily workflows to automate tasks, foster innovation, and maximize productivity
  • Superb communication skills - you keep stakeholders aligned, manage competing priorities transparently, and build consensus with engineers at all levels
  • The mentality of an entrepreneur/owner and a strong bias to action
  • Humility. You believe in treating all people with dignity and respect, regardless of title or tenure, and you approach tough conversations with empathy
  • A Bachelor's degree in CS, Math, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)

Benefits

  • Flexible work environment
  • Unlimited Vacation (if salaried) / Competitive PTO (if hourly)
  • 100% paid employee health benefit options (including medical, dental, and vision)
  • 401(k) with employer funded match
  • Corporate wellness program with Wellhub
  • Sabbatical leave (for employees with 5+ years of service)
  • Competitive paid parental leave and fertility/family planning reimbursement
  • Cell phone reimbursement
  • Employee Resource Groups and ZocClubs to promote shared community and belonging
  • Great Place to Work Certified
