Mid Frontend Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Frontend Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Frontend Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with experience in modern frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), build tools, and UI design libraries is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help you stand out in team settings. These skills ensure you can create high-quality, user-friendly interfaces that work well in dynamic, cross-functional development environments.

What are some common challenges faced by mid-level frontend developers when working on cross-functional teams?

Mid-level frontend developers often collaborate with backend developers, designers, and product managers, which can sometimes lead to challenges in communication and aligning on project requirements. Balancing the need for delivering visually appealing, responsive interfaces while ensuring performance and accessibility can also be demanding. Additionally, adapting to evolving frameworks or integrating new tools as decided by the team may require continuous learning and flexibility. Successful mid-level frontend developers proactively seek feedback, clarify requirements early, and stay updated on best practices to navigate these challenges.

What are Mid Frontend Developers?

Mid Frontend Developers are professionals who specialize in building and maintaining the user-facing parts of web applications, typically with 2-4 years of experience. They are responsible for translating design mockups into interactive websites or apps using technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js. Their role often involves collaborating with designers and backend developers, optimizing applications for speed and responsiveness, and ensuring cross-browser compatibility. Unlike junior developers, mid-level developers are expected to work more independently, solve moderately complex problems, and contribute to code reviews and project planning.

What is the difference between Mid Frontend Developer vs Junior Frontend Developer?

This role is ideal for an engineer with solid professional experience in Java who wants to expand their impact across the full stack, work with modern tooling, and contribute to high-visibility projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain Java-based applications and services across the full stack.
  • Implement RESTful and SOAP-based integrations with internal and external systems.
  • Collaborate with product owners, architects, and teammates to refine requirements and translate them into technical designs.
  • Design and optimize relational database schemas, queries, and stored procedures for PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Develop and maintain front-end components and web interfaces, collaborating closely with UX and front-end engineers.
  • Participate in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve defects and production issues in Linux and Windows Server environments.
  • Utilize scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python) for automation, tooling, and environment setup.
  • Use Git for source control and follow established branching and release strategies.
  • Track work and documentation using Jira and Confluence in an Agile/Scrum or Kanban framework.
  • Contribute to continuous integration and delivery pipelines and support build/deployment automation.
  • Proactively leverage AI developer tools (where applicable) to improve productivity, code quality, and documentation.
  • Document designs, APIs, and operational procedures for maintainability and knowledge sharing.

Minimum Requirements

  • Knowledge of relational database design and experience with SQL and working with both Postgres and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience developing API integrations based on RESTful and SOAP web services based libraries (Swagger, Jersey, Resteasy and/or Spring-WS).
  • Confident working in both a Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Ubuntu equivalents) and Windows Server environment.
  • Experience with at least one scripting language (for instance, Bash or Python).
  • Experience working with software version control software including GIT.
  • Experience working with software management tools including Jira and Confluence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) based applications and working with application servers including Wildfly and JBoss.
  • Experience developing Spring-based applications (e.g., Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security).
  • Experience developing web applications using JavaScript and React frameworks.
  • Experience developing Java Swing applications.
  • Experience leveraging AI developer assistant tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc. into the day-to-day development pipeline.
  • Experience in designing and building data analytics applications and using reporting tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Superset, or similar.
  • Experience using cloud-based managed services for data warehousing / analytics is a plus.
  • Experience using automation tools including Vagrant, Ansible, or Chef is desirable.
  • Experience with big-data management and technologies including MongoDB and NoSQL is highly desirable.
  • Experience developing mobile Android or iOS applications.

Core Competencies

  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills with attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative, cross-functional team.
  • Commitment to secure coding practices and robust software quality.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new technologies, frameworks, and tools.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems

Work Environment

  • Hybrid work model centered around the Schaumburg, IL office, blending on-site collaboration with remote work.
  • Fast-paced, collaborative engineering culture with a focus on quality and security.
