Job description

The Staff Cables Engineer will work on project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on a variety of projects, including underground, trenchless, and/or submarine power cable lines. The Staff Cable Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting power line plans to meet budget constraints, design requirements, and client needs.

  • Performs cable design for projects from the conceptual phase through design completion, including routing, duct bank design, conductor selection, splice vault design, cost estimating, and termination structure coordination.
  • Modifies and reviews power line components based on project needs and client requirements.
  • Prepares materials necessary for cable construction: technical specifications and data sheets, Requests for Qualifications (RFQs), technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
  • Performs calculations necessary for cable design, including alignment, cable ampacity, cable pulling, etc.
  • Applies strong knowledge of commonly used underground powerline engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the distribution and transmission engineering services industry.
  • Researches and compiles project-related data as required by project managers. Compiles studies and reports. Writes technical specifications.
  • Researches and interprets industry standards, applying basic knowledge of those standards to project needs.
  • Update drawings provided by senior engineers to verify that corrections are made using multiple CAD-related software tools.
  • Compiles information for client presentations, shop drawing reviews, and contract administration for the design of power, process, pipeline, industrial, healthcare, airport, educational, commercial, governmental, and military facilities.
  • Performs field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 3 years of relevant engineering experience required. Consulting preferred.
  • Or Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering Technology degree from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of relevant engineering experience required. Consulting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of cable equipment design codes (e.g., IEEE, AEIC, ICEA).
  • Knowledge of underground and/or submarine cables construction methods and cable system equipment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment, and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Basic knowledge of navigating common CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D), and/or cable pulling and ampacity analysis programs.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in distribution design software and GIS to aid in design.
  • Strong knowledge regarding easements, right-of-way, and permitting for distribution projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment, and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
