What is a from home BGP network engineer?

From Home BGP Network Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and manage Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) networks while working remotely. They are responsible for configuring routers, troubleshooting network issues, optimizing routing policies, and ensuring the security and reliability of network connections between different organizations and internet service providers. Working from home, they use secure remote access tools to monitor and maintain network infrastructure, often collaborating with global teams across different time zones. Their role is critical in maintaining smooth internet and enterprise connectivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a from home BGP network engineer?

To thrive as a From Home BGP Network Engineer, you need a deep understanding of networking protocols (especially BGP), routing, and troubleshooting, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field and relevant industry certifications like Cisco CCNP or Juniper JNCIP. Proficiency with network monitoring tools, configuration management platforms, and remote troubleshooting systems is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for efficient remote collaboration and resolving complex network issues. These abilities ensure reliable network performance, quick issue resolution, and seamless connectivity for distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote BGP network engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote BGP Network Engineers often face challenges such as troubleshooting complex routing issues without physical access to equipment and coordinating with on-site teams across different time zones. Effective communication, thorough documentation, and strong remote diagnostic skills are essential to overcome these obstacles. Utilizing secure remote access tools and collaborating closely with local IT staff can help ensure network reliability and quick resolution of issues. Staying up-to-date with the latest BGP best practices also supports successful remote work.

Job description

Most network engineers work in data centers with reliable power and climate control. Our network engineers sometimes work in remote utility sites, tribal broadband deployments, and locations where the closest coffee shop is two hours away. If you're good with that, keep reading.

We design and implement enterprise and carrier-grade network infrastructure for some of the most demanding environments around. That means BGP, OSPF, MPLS, SD-WAN, and all the things you'd expect — plus the ability to make it work when the physical constraints are unusual, the budgets are real, and the clients are counting on you.

We're looking for a Senior Network Engineer who brings deep protocol knowledge, clean design thinking, and the ability to work independently. ISP or WISP experience is a strong plus. Remote work is possible for the right candidate, though some travel to project sites will be required.

What You'll Do
  • Design, architect, and implement enterprise and carrier-grade network infrastructure
  • Configure and troubleshoot BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VLAN, and SD-WAN deployments
  • Lead network assessments and produce detailed design documentation
  • Collaborate with field teams on installation and commissioning
  • Provide Tier 3 support for complex network issues
  • Evaluate and recommend hardware and software solutions
  • Support ISP and WISP clients with routing, peering, and capacity planning
  • Mentor junior engineers and assist with internal knowledge sharing
What We're Looking For
  • CCNP or equivalent certification (JNCIP, PCNSE, etc.)
  • 5+ years of hands-on network engineering experience
  • Deep expertise in BGP, OSPF, MPLS, and enterprise switching
  • ISP or WISP network design and operations experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with SD-WAN platforms (Cisco Viptela, Meraki, Fortinet, etc.)
  • Ability to produce clear, professional network design documentation
  • Strong troubleshooting skills under pressure
  • Comfortable working independently and communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
The Honest Part

You will be asked to make things work in places where "run a new cable" means "charter a bush plane." You should be comfortable explaining to a client why their network is slow when the answer is "because you have it configured like it's 2008" — and doing so without making them feel bad about it.

What We Offer
  • Competitive pay commensurate with experience
  • Meaningful work on projects that matter — real infrastructure, real communities
  • Travel opportunities across Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, and beyond
  • A tight-knit team that trusts you to do your job well
  • Room to grow as the company grows
  • The satisfaction of working in places most companies won't go
