Contract Bgp Network Engineer information

What is a Contract BGP Network Engineer?

A Contract BGP Network Engineer is a networking professional who specializes in configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) on networks, typically on a temporary or project-specific basis. They are hired as contractors rather than permanent employees and work with organizations to optimize network routing, ensure redundancy, and maintain internet connectivity. Their expertise is crucial for ISPs, data centers, and large enterprises that rely on complex network infrastructures. Contract BGP Network Engineers often collaborate with other IT staff to implement best practices and resolve routing issues. Their role may also include network documentation and providing technical support during migrations or upgrades.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract BGP network engineer?

To thrive as a Contract BGP Network Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), network design, and troubleshooting, typically backed by a relevant degree and certifications such as Cisco CCNP or CCIE. Experience with routers, firewalls, network monitoring tools, and configuration management systems is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication make you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring network reliability, optimizing performance, and quickly resolving complex connectivity issues in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by contract BGP network engineers when integrating with existing network infrastructures?

Contract BGP Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as dealing with legacy hardware, undocumented network topologies, and varied configuration standards when integrating with existing infrastructures. Additionally, ensuring seamless BGP peering with external providers while maintaining routing security and policy compliance can require careful planning and troubleshooting. Effective collaboration with in-house network teams and clear documentation are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring a smooth integration process.

Job description

Most network engineers work in data centers with reliable power and climate control. Our network engineers sometimes work in remote utility sites, tribal broadband deployments, and locations where the closest coffee shop is two hours away. If you're good with that, keep reading.

We design and implement enterprise and carrier-grade network infrastructure for some of the most demanding environments around. That means BGP, OSPF, MPLS, SD-WAN, and all the things you'd expect — plus the ability to make it work when the physical constraints are unusual, the budgets are real, and the clients are counting on you.

We're looking for a Senior Network Engineer who brings deep protocol knowledge, clean design thinking, and the ability to work independently. ISP or WISP experience is a strong plus. Remote work is possible for the right candidate, though some travel to project sites will be required.

What You'll Do
  • Design, architect, and implement enterprise and carrier-grade network infrastructure
  • Configure and troubleshoot BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VLAN, and SD-WAN deployments
  • Lead network assessments and produce detailed design documentation
  • Collaborate with field teams on installation and commissioning
  • Provide Tier 3 support for complex network issues
  • Evaluate and recommend hardware and software solutions
  • Support ISP and WISP clients with routing, peering, and capacity planning
  • Mentor junior engineers and assist with internal knowledge sharing
What We're Looking For
  • CCNP or equivalent certification (JNCIP, PCNSE, etc.)
  • 5+ years of hands-on network engineering experience
  • Deep expertise in BGP, OSPF, MPLS, and enterprise switching
  • ISP or WISP network design and operations experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with SD-WAN platforms (Cisco Viptela, Meraki, Fortinet, etc.)
  • Ability to produce clear, professional network design documentation
  • Strong troubleshooting skills under pressure
  • Comfortable working independently and communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
The Honest Part

You will be asked to make things work in places where "run a new cable" means "charter a bush plane." You should be comfortable explaining to a client why their network is slow when the answer is "because you have it configured like it's 2008" — and doing so without making them feel bad about it.

What We Offer
  • Competitive pay commensurate with experience
  • Meaningful work on projects that matter — real infrastructure, real communities
  • Travel opportunities across Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, and beyond
  • A tight-knit team that trusts you to do your job well
  • Room to grow as the company grows
  • The satisfaction of working in places most companies won't go
