What is a Freshman Internship job?

A Freshman Internship is an entry-level opportunity designed for first-year college students to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting. It helps students explore career interests, develop relevant skills, and build their resumes early in their academic journey. These internships may be paid or unpaid and can be part-time or full-time, depending on the employer. They often involve assisting with projects, conducting research, or supporting teams in various tasks.

Is it possible to get internships as a freshman?

Freshman internships are available in many fields and often focus on skill development and learning. While some internships require students to be at least sophomores or have certain coursework completed, many companies offer programs specifically for freshmen to gain early work experience, sometimes with flexible schedules or remote options.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Freshman Internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freshman Intern, you need a willingness to learn, solid time management, and a basic understanding of the industry or field you are interning in, typically demonstrated through coursework or extracurricular experience. Familiarity with common office software like Microsoft Office, Google Suite, or specialized tools relevant to the industry can be helpful but is often taught on the job. Standout interns often bring strong communication skills, adaptability, and a proactive attitude toward taking on new tasks. These qualities help freshmen maximize learning opportunities, contribute effectively to teams, and build a valuable professional foundation.

Can I do an internship at 16?

Freshman internships are often available to students aged 16 and older, depending on the company's policies and local labor laws. Many internships for high school students require parental consent and may involve part-time hours or specific skill requirements. It's important to check the eligibility criteria of each internship program before applying.

Can a 1st year student get an internship?

Job description

Job Objective:
Hilcorp offers field and office internships to students based upon previous experience and current course work. Field interns will work on the North Slope and Prudhoe Bay of AK.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Field internships are offered to students taking freshman and sophomore level classes. Freshman field interns will be exposed to daily field operations as well as facility construction, workover rig operations, drilling rig operations, and coiled tubing operations. Sophomore students will be exposed to the same operations but will also work on and present an engineering project for the second half of the summer that can range from optimizing facilities to optimizing and implementing secondary recovery equipment. At the completion of the internship, students will have a better understanding of oilfield fluid types, processing, and handling; artificial lift methods, the importance of volumes and pressures, and the production path from reservoir to sales. This understanding will yield a distinct advantage in their petroleum classes.
  • Junior level students and above will be eligible for an office internship working with one of our asset teams. Office interns will conduct reservoir studies that will include analyzing well logs, working with a geologist to draft structure and net pay maps, managing pressure and production databases, and analyzing that data to quantify the oil and gas reserves of the project. Interns will also evaluate the economics of projects, research well files, create wellbore diagrams, and work with operations to create the workover procedure for the project they work on. The internship will include presentations throughout the summer to management for project approvals as needed. Past intern projects have included single field studies, recomplete proposals, and drillwells. Interns then oversee the approved project in the field if possible.
  • Adheres to the company's values - integrity, ownership, urgency, alignment and innovation.
  • Supports company vision and mission.
  • Adheres to established work schedule, attendance standards and is punctual to work and meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:
  • Applicant must have full summer available.
  • Intern should have an interest in pursuing a career in the oil & gas industry.
  • 3.0 or higher GPA

Education Requirements:
  • Students working towards either their BS or MS in Petroleum Engineering are encouraged to apply.
