ABOUT THE ROLE:

The videographer leads NCSL’s video production efforts, creating compelling visual content that supports the organization’s communications, marketing, events and educational initiatives. This role serves as a strategic partner across the organization supporting complex projects from concept through final delivery while ensuring high-quality storytelling, brand consistency, and member engagement. The videographer works closely with the Director of Marketing to strengthen NCSL’s visual communications and expand its reach and impact.


WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Produces and edits high-quality video and motion graphics content to support NCSL’s marketing, communications, events and editorial needs across digital platforms.
  • Leads video and graphics projects from concept to completion, including pre-production planning, on-site production, lighting/audio, post-production editing and final delivery.
  • Serves as NCSL’s expert on video production, visual storytelling and multimedia communications while advising team leaders and staff on creative approaches, production methods and content strategy.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to translate communications goals into clear video deliverables, timelines, shot lists and production plans.
  • Creates multiple deliverable formats (e.g., 16:9, 9:16, 1:1) and ensures videos meet technical requirements and brand standards for web, social and event use.
  • Manages video assets, file organization and archiving; ensures appropriate releases/permissions and supports efficient review/approval workflows.
  • Advises on and maintains video equipment and software; recommends upgrades and best practices to improve production quality and efficiency.
  • Establishes production priorities alongside Director of Marketing and Chief Communications Officer to develop project plans and manage multiple concurrent initiatives with potentially competing deadlines, ensuring high-quality deliverables are completed on schedule and within defined budget.
  • Serves as a liaison for outside vendors as needed (e.g., freelancers, editors, captioning services) and ensures work meets quality, timeline and budget expectations.
  • Evaluates, recommends and implements new technologies, production methodologies and AI-enabled tools to improve content quality, audience engagement and production efficiency.
  • Stays current on video production trends, platform requirements and storytelling best practices; applies learnings to improve NCSL’s video content.
  • Assists in the representation of NCSL at conferences, legislative meetings and other engagements that require professional video production and multimedia coverage.
  • Performs other duties, as required.

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.


THE WORK ENVIRONMENT: This full-time position is mostly performed in an office environment, on or off-site, with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. NCSL provides a unique hybrid remote work policy with the requirement that staff travel on their own fare to the NCSL office for four days every six (6) weeks for team meetings and professional development. Employees routinely use standard office equipment such as laptops, printers, scanners, copy machines, and smartphones. Occasional travel by airplane, including overnights and weekends, is required. Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in film/video production, communications, journalism or a related field. Equivalent technical training, certifications or other relevant experience may be substituted for the education requirements.
  • Minimum five years of professional videography/video production experience required.
  • Advanced proficiency with video production and post-production tools, including camera operation, lighting, audio capture, and editing software.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines and deliver production-ready digital assets in a variety of formats.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work with internal stakeholders and external vendors.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Sound judgement in communicating information in a neutral, nonpartisan manner.
  • A basic understanding and appreciation of representative democracy.
  • Experience with AI tools for video production and editing such as After Effects and Veo.
  • Ability to travel up to 8 times per year, with most trips being 3-4 nights, as well as work extended hours, possibly evenings and weekends, usually associated with events/travel/fiscal year end.
