What are remote textile design internships?

Remote textile design internships are internship opportunities that allow students or aspiring designers to work from home or any location, rather than being physically present at a company's office or studio. Interns typically assist with tasks such as creating digital patterns, researching trends, contributing to design projects, and communicating with team members online. These internships offer the chance to gain practical experience, build portfolios, and develop skills in textile design while maintaining a flexible schedule. Remote internships are especially valuable for those who cannot relocate or who wish to work with companies based in different cities or countries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote textile design internships, and why are they important?

To thrive in a remote textile design internship, you need a foundational understanding of textile design principles, pattern creation, and color theory, typically supported by coursework or a relevant degree. Familiarity with design software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and textile-specific CAD programs is commonly required. Strong communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating and meeting deadlines in a remote setting. These skills ensure you can produce high-quality designs, effectively contribute to team projects, and manage tasks independently from a distance.

What types of projects and collaboration can I expect during a remote textile design internship?

As a remote textile design intern, you'll typically work on projects such as creating digital patterns, developing colorways, and assisting with fabric mockups. You'll collaborate closely with design teams through virtual meetings, sharing your progress for feedback and learning from more experienced designers. Communication is key, as you'll often coordinate with product developers, marketing teams, and, occasionally, manufacturers. This setup offers valuable exposure to real-world textile design processes and helps you build a professional network, even while working remotely.

Job description

THIS JOB IS ON-SITE, NOT ELIGIBLE FOR HYBRID OR REMOTE, BASED IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

Marolina Outdoor is a team built for life outdoors-driven by a passion for the water, the woods, and the people who live for both. Through our brands, Huk and Nomad, we design high-performance fishing and hunting apparel that works as hard as the environments they're made for. From early casts to last light in the field, everything we create is rooted in purpose, innovation, and a deep respect for the outdoors.

The Design I is an entry-level creative role within our Design Department, supporting the development of performance apparel for Fishing and Hunting categories. Reporting directly to a Senior Designer, this individual will contribute to the seasonal design process - from initial concept through production handoff - while also providing essential administrative and organizational support to keep the design pipeline running smoothly. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career designer with a passion for the outdoors and technical apparel to grow within a collaborative, fast-paced product team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design & Product Development

  • Assist in designing performance apparel across fishing and hunting product lines, including base layers, mid layers, outerwear, and technical bottoms.
  • Support the creation of seasonal line plans, mood boards, color, graphic and print design in collaboration with the Senior Designer.
  • Develop detailed tech packs, flat sketches, and construction specifications for production.
  • Collaborate with the Design team to research and select fabrics, trims, and hardware appropriate to performance end-use.
  • Participate in fit sessions and proto reviews; document feedback and communicate changes clearly to vendors and internal stakeholders.
  • Stay current on trends in both perfromance and lifestyle outdoor markets, including competitor product analysis and emerging performance technologies.

Administrative & Operational Support

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date product development files, design libraries, and sample tracking logs.
  • Manage and organize design assets including CADs, tech packs, colorways, and spec sheets in shared team systems (e.g., PLM, Adobe Creative Cloud libraries).
  • Coordinate sample requests, track sample status, and communicate with vendors on timelines under the direction of the Senior Designer.
  • Prepare presentation decks and line review materials for internal meetings and buy sessions.
  • Assist in scheduling and documenting design calendar milestones, ensuring deliverables are met on time.
  • Support cross-functional communication with merchandising, product development, and sourcing teams as needed.

Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, Apparel Design, Textile Design, or a related field - or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 0-2 years of professional experience in apparel design; internship experience in performance or outdoor apparel is strongly valued.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop; comfort with InDesign a plus.
  • Experience with or exposure to PLM or product management systems.
  • Experience with AI enabled design and workflows.
  • Familiarity with tech pack development or equivalent.
  • Understanding of garment construction, pattern-making fundamentals, and performance fabrication.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail; ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience with or exposure to PLM or product management systems.
  • Basic understanding of the retail and wholesale product development calendar.

COMPETENCIES & ATTRIBUTES

  • Creative curiosity balanced with strong execution and follow-through.
  • Consumer-centric mindset with an understanding of the functional demands of hunting and fishing environments.
  • Eagerness to learn and receive feedback in a collaborative, mentor-supported setting.
  • Adaptability in a dynamic product environment with shifting priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Commitment to quality and accuracy in all deliverables, both creative and administrative.
  • Personal interest in fishing, hunting and other outdoor pursuits - a genuine connection to the consumer is a meaningful advantage.

Benefits

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA), Company matches up to 6%
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Training & Development
