How does a freelance visual merchandiser typically collaborate with retail teams and store managers?

Freelance visual merchandisers often work closely with retail teams and store managers to understand brand guidelines, current promotions, and store needs. They usually coordinate schedules for installations, communicate design concepts, and provide training to in-store staff on maintaining displays. Building strong relationships and clear communication are key to ensuring visual strategies align with sales goals and company standards. Freelancers may also provide regular feedback and updates on display performance to store leadership.

What is a freelance visual merchandiser?

Freelance visual merchandisers are independent professionals who design and implement visual displays in retail spaces to attract customers and boost sales. Unlike in-house merchandisers, they work on a contract basis for various clients, offering flexibility and specialized expertise. They collaborate closely with store managers and marketing teams to align the visual presentation with brand identity and promotional goals.

How to become a freelance visual merchandiser?

Visual merchandisers create eye-catching displays and design store layouts to attract customers and encourage them to buy products. To pursue a career as a freelance visual merchandiser, you need several years of experience in the design or retail industry. Formal education is not required, but degree programs in visual merchandising, design, fashion, or marketing provide training on how to utilize lighting, arrange showcases, and make designs manually and with computer-aided design (CAD) programs. Acquire a position in a retail store to gain experience and learn how displays are built. Intern or volunteer with a professional visual merchandiser or with a charitable organization with a retail store. Practice decorating store windows if possible and assist with merchandise display. Take pictures of all the work you do to create a substantial portfolio. Once you have several years of experience, market your skills to retailers to obtain freelance visual merchandiser positions.

How much does a freelance visual merchandiser get paid?

Freelance visual merchandisers typically earn between $20 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, location, and project scope. Rates can vary based on the complexity of displays and the client's budget, with some professionals charging flat fees for specific projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance visual merchandiser?

To thrive as a Freelance Visual Merchandiser, you need a strong sense of design, knowledge of retail trends, and experience in creating compelling product displays, often supported by a background in visual merchandising or a related field. Job description

Senior Graphic Designer Hartmann&Forbes® | Tualatin, Oregon | On-site

About the role

Hartmann&Forbes is hiring a Senior Graphic Designer to lead creative production and elevate the visual brand across print and digital. This is a hands-on role with real ownership: you will translate creative direction into finished work, build the systems that sustain brand consistency, and raise the standard for everything that carries our name.

You will report to the Director of Marketing and work across the full brand output, from the Reference Kit and seasonal tabloids to photography production, merchandising, and the website.

What you will own

Design and layout for brand and sales assets, including the Brand Book, Product Portfolio, Style Guide, Price List, tabloids, email, and collateral. Creative production workflows from brief through final delivery. Brand Guidelines, quality standards, and template systems. Photography shot lists, post-production, and asset libraries. Merchandising, event, and showroom materials. Visual execution for the website. Management of internal designers and freelance production artists. Vendor and print production coordination.

What we are looking for

Bachelor's degree in Design or a related field. 5+ years of experience in a multi-channel environment. 5+ years of supervisory experience. A genuine eye for high-end interior design and an understanding of the trade. Fluency in both creative and business software. Print production experience. Strong communication and follow-up skills. The organizational discipline to manage multiple projects without losing quality. Comfort working without a project manager in a self-directed environment.

Experience in premium or trade-focused markets is a strong advantage.
