Job description

Overview

Responsibilities

Byers Engineering, a MasTec company, is seeking a full-time OSP Designer in support of a large-scale telecommunications project for both OSP Fiber and Copper Networks.

The position requires experience with outside plant in aerial, buried, and/or underground facilities, as well as a thorough knowledge of all issues related to federal, state, or local government permitting. Additionally, it requires familiarity with pole and conduit licensing procedures and utility permitting agencies. The OSP Engineer must work cohesively with the Engineering PM.  

In addition, you will:

  • Perform on-site engineering of any proposed work
  • Analyze local and wide area network systems, and develop the most cost-efficient fiber/copper network route design in accordance with customer specifications and guidelines
  • Produce high-quality, constructible Engineering Work Order (“EWO”) packages for the Verizon networks
  • Read and understand road prints, utility maps, and as-builts to identify conflicts with existing facilities
  • Collaborate with any necessary vendor, as well as internal GIS and CAD teams, to produce all required documentation for application packages
  • Follow very specific and detailed procedures already implemented, while remaining flexible enough to readily adapt to changing standards and procedures without notice
  • Coordinate with the project team for forecasting, scheduling, resource management, and quality assurance
  • Review project deliverables for accuracy and apprise the project management team of risks, issues, and recommended mitigations
  • Work in tandem with various managers across the project to identify scope creep, manage to change orders, and complete routine billing
  • Ensures the integrity of the customer access network is maintained and provides support for the deployment of access technologies
  • Assist with as-built package completion and delivery, as well as billing closeout

Qualifications

About You:

  • Sound OSP engineering experience deploying fiber optic and copper networks
  • Knowledge of engineering principles within the OSP job-related functional area, including general practices, procedures, and industry standards
  • Familiar with legal requirements as defined by the municipal, state, and federal laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of Verizon’s CoFEE (Change of Facility, Engineering, and Enhancement) EWO database
  • Knowledge of fiber optic and copper counts, fiber assignments, and splicing schematics in all OSP environments, specifically in the MDU environment
  • Knowledge of engineering tools, including Verizon's 3-GIS system, Microstation, AutoCAD, OCalc, 3-GIS, or any similar GIS/KMZ platforms
  • Proficient in Adobe, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, Google Sheets, and Google Drive
  • Possess strong communication and people skills
  • Strong language skills are required, both oral and written
  • Show a “sense of urgency” to get the job done to meet all due dates
  • Follow up with our customer and provide a status of all assigned work
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively at multiple levels: from team members to executive management
  • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field is preferred, or Telecom, Engineering, or Drafting completed courses, and a diploma from a technical school or community college
  • Local candidates to the Washington, DC area only, for a hybrid work schedule requiring outdoor site visits in various weather conditions, and remote work when not in the field

Compensation of $35-$40 per hour, depending on the experience.
