Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Specialist

Work Location & Schedule

This is a hybrid position based in our Charlotte, NC office. Team members are expected to work on-site two days per week and remotely three days per week.

About the Role

The Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Specialist supports paid search initiatives that drive customer acquisition and marketing performance. This role focuses on assisting with execution, optimization, and analysis of search engine marketing efforts, using data and testing to improve efficiency and effectiveness. The SEM Specialist works cross-functionally with marketing, data analytics, and creative partners to help ensure paid search programs align with broader business objectives and performance goals.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Support the execution and ongoing optimization of paid search campaigns that contribute to customer acquisition and growth for TaxSlayer’s Consumer and Professional tax software.

  • Assist in developing and refining SEM strategies to help capture customer demand throughout the year, including increased activity during peak tax season (December – April).

  • Use campaign performance data, testing, and insights to help improve overall marketing effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Manage account health through routine campaign optimizations.

  • Help ensure paid search ad content align with brand standards, compliance requirements, and established SEM best practices.

  • Collaborate with marketing, data analytics, product development, and creative partners to align paid search efforts with broader marketing and business goals.

  • Contribution to paid search performance goals, including customer acquisition, efficiency, and growth targets.

  • Consistent execution on assigned duties with attention to quality and accuracy.

  • Ability to apply data and insights to support optimization and testing efforts.

  • Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams to support integrated marketing initiatives.

  • Other duties as assigned

Must-Have Skills & Experience
  • Strong work ethic with a proactive, ownership-driven mindset and 100% effort given towards accomplishing objectives.

  • Foundational experience with paid search platforms such as Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Search Ads 360 (academic or hands-on experience is acceptable).

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret performance data and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Familiarity with digital marketing analytics and reporting tools.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (data manipulation, basic formulas).

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with shifting priorities.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a willingness to learn and grow within the role.

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment with minimal physical demands.

  • Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods.

Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 6 months – 3 years of experience supporting paid search or digital marketing campaigns.
