How much do freelance radio jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for freelance radio in the United States is $47.71, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.28 and $61.78 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a freelance radio?

A Freelance Radio job involves working independently in the radio industry, providing services such as hosting, producing, voice-over work, or reporting on a contract or per-project basis. Freelancers may work with multiple radio stations, podcasts, or online platforms instead of being employed by a single company. This role offers flexibility but requires strong networking skills and self-promotion to secure gigs.

What does a freelance radio do?

A typical day for a Freelance Radio professional often involves researching topics, scripting content, recording or live broadcasting segments, and editing audio files for quality and clarity. You may also spend time networking with potential clients or stations, pitching show ideas, and coordinating with guests or collaborators remotely. Flexibility is key, since you may juggle multiple projects for different clients or adapt your working hours to meet deadlines or live broadcast times. Many freelancers work from a home studio, but the role may occasionally require travel to cover events or record on-site interviews. This independent structure provides both creative freedom and the responsibility for managing your own schedule and workload.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a freelance radio?

To thrive as a Freelance Radio professional, you need strong verbal communication skills, experience in audio production, and a good understanding of broadcast journalism or entertainment. Familiarity with digital audio editing software (such as Adobe Audition or Audacity), remote broadcasting tools, and home recording equipment is highly beneficial. Time management, networking ability, and creativity help build a successful client base and engaging on-air presence. These skills ensure you deliver high-quality broadcasts, manage multiple projects independently, and remain competitive in a dynamic freelance market.

Do freelance radio hosts make a lot of money?

Freelance radio hosts' earnings vary widely based on experience, audience size, and the platforms they use. Successful hosts with a large following can earn a substantial income through sponsorships, advertising, and paid appearances, but many earn modestly or supplement income with other work. Income potential often depends on skills in content creation, marketing, and audio production.

How do I become a freelance radio host with no experience?

To become a freelance radio host with no experience, start by developing strong communication skills and creating sample recordings or a demo reel. Gain familiarity with audio editing tools and seek opportunities to volunteer or collaborate with local stations or online platforms to build your portfolio and gain exposure.

Job description

Position Summary:

The Editor, Visuals will be a leader and champion of visual storytelling across MPR News, shaping how journalism is conceived, presented, and experienced on every channel (platform). This role carries dual responsibility: driving strong visual editorial judgment throughout the newsroom and helping improve the production systems and workflows that bring that journalism to life.

At the core of this position is a commitment to elevating visual thinking from the very beginning of the editorial process. The editor will be a key voice in story planning conversations — helping reporters, producers, and editors identify visual opportunities before assignments develop and ensuring that the strongest visual approach is considered alongside the story itself. This includes guiding decisions around lead images, visual narratives and innovative video storytelling in shaping how stories are presented and building a newsroom culture where visual judgment is valued at every level.

In fast-moving news situations, this editor will help teams make strong visual decisions quickly — prioritizing coverage, allocating resources effectively, and identifying where visual storytelling can have the greatest impact for our audience. Timely visual feedback and editorial clarity are essential to this work.

The editor brings expert experience with the tools and technology of visual newsgathering and news production, with priority on audio and video. Working in close partnership with Operations/Production, the editor reviews and implements production tools and technology systems, ensuring all team members have the foundational support they need to create compelling, engaging content. The editor develops detailed plans to reach concrete goals and works hands-on to realize them: directing work and coordinating visual staff and freelancers, and training staff on audio, visual (still and video), digital production, and CMS.

In addition to leadership and team building responsibilities, the editor will produce and edit exceptional daily visual news, features, explainers, evergreen content, and long-term projects — modeling the visual standards and storytelling strategy they champion across the newsroom.

The ability to collaborate effectively with news leaders, reporters, and cross-departmental teams is essential. In a multichannel environment where visuals shape audience engagement and first impressions, this editor helps ensure that MPR News content informs, includes, and inspires Minnesota audiences across the state.

This position sits in the collective bargaining agreement between MPR and Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (“SAG-AFTRA”).

Expected Compensation Range: $39.42 - $47.30 per hour. The exact salary rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Location: Hybrid, St. Paul, MN
