What is a freelance merchandise planner?

A Freelance Merchandise Planner is an independent professional who helps retailers or brands manage their inventory, forecast sales, and plan product assortments to maximize profitability. Unlike in-house merchandise planners, freelancers work on a contract basis and may serve multiple clients, providing flexibility and specialized expertise. Their responsibilities typically include analyzing sales data, developing inventory strategies, and collaborating with buyers and suppliers to ensure the right products are available at the right time. Freelance Merchandise Planners play a crucial role in optimizing stock levels, reducing excess inventory, and supporting overall business growth.

Despite working remotely, freelancers are expected to be proactive in seeking updates, providing insights, and maintaining strong relationships to ensure merchandise is allocated efficiently and targets are met.

    • Create ad-hoc analyses to react dynamically to current and future business environments.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner with Inventory Planners, Merchandise Planners, and Merchandising to identify action plans for merchandise allocation and inventory initiatives.
    • Build strong partnerships with Store Operations & Field Visual to respond proactively and reactively to store needs and product placement.
    • Collaborate with E-commerce, Supply Chain, and Logistics to improve inventory flow, executing seamless markdowns, pullbacks, and transfers.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience in retail inventory planning, allocation, pricing strategy, or replenishment (Value/Off-Price retail experience is a major plus).
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and data visualization/reporting tools (e.g., Tableau, Cognos); sell-through curves, and margin math.
  • Proven ability to analyze aging stock data and formulate profitable exit or promotional strategies.
