What is a freelance merchandise planner?

A Freelance Merchandise Planner is an independent professional who helps retailers or brands manage their inventory, forecast sales, and plan product assortments to maximize profitability. Unlike in-house merchandise planners, freelancers work on a contract basis and may serve multiple clients, providing flexibility and specialized expertise. Freelance merchandise planners often coordinate closely with retailers and suppliers through a combination of virtual meetings, cloud-based planning tools, and shared data platforms. Regular communication is key, as planners need to align with buying teams, analyze sales trends, and adjust inventory strategies in real time. Despite working remotely, freelancers are expected to be proactive in seeking updates, providing insights, and maintaining strong relationships to ensure merchandise is allocated efficiently and targets are met.
