What is a Freelance Jewelry job?

A Freelance Jewelry job involves designing, creating, or selling jewelry independently rather than working for a specific company. Freelancers may craft custom pieces, repair jewelry, or source and sell designs through online platforms, craft fairs, or personal networks. They often handle all aspects of the business, including marketing, client communication, and production. This type of work allows for creative freedom but requires strong business and time management skills to succeed.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance jewelers, and how can they be overcome?

Freelance jewelers often face challenges such as maintaining a steady stream of clients, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and sourcing high-quality materials. Building a strong personal brand, networking in local and online communities, and delivering exceptional customer service can help attract repeat business. Staying organized with project management tools and setting clear timelines with clients ensures smooth workflow and on-time completion. Over time, investing in continuous learning and staying updated with trends can also open up new opportunities and help you stand out in the market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Freelance Jewelry position, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Freelance Jeweler, you need expertise in jewelry design, metalworking, gemstone setting, and repair, often supported by formal training or a relevant certification. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, jeweler's benches, and industry-standard tools is highly advantageous. Strong creativity, attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective client communication skills will help set you apart. These abilities enable professionals to deliver exceptional custom pieces, build a loyal client base, and thrive in a competitive, independent work environment.

Job description

Freelance Art Director - Part-time, Contract
About Kinn Kinn is a modern heirloom fine jewelry brand. For the past seven years we've brought storytelling and personal meaning back into the jewelry people wear every day - celebrating a woman's many moments lived. We're a small, founder-led brand team that cares deeply about taste, craft, and how the brand shows up in the world.
The Role
We're looking for a freelance Art Director to join our Brand team on a part-time contract basis, starting as coverage during a team member's leave (roughly 1-2 months).
This is a hybrid creative role. You'll lead art direction and on-set production for our campaigns and help shape how the brand comes alive on social. We're not looking for someone purely executional - we want a creative partner who brings fully formed ideas, anticipates rather than waits to be briefed, and has a point of view on how brand translates into content.
You'll work closely with our Head of Brand and Founder, and ideally you're someone who's as comfortable directing a shoot as you are thinking about how that campaign lives across the grid.
What you'll do
Art Direction & Production
  • Concept and lead visual direction for campaigns, product launches, and digital activations
  • Build moodboards, references, shot lists, and visual treatments
  • Direct photo and video shoots on set - lighting, composition, styling, props
  • Manage shoot logistics: call sheets, scheduling, file prep, vendor coordination
  • Guide post-production: selects, editing notes, pacing, and final visual polish

Social & Content Direction
  • Lead the creative direction of how the brand shows up on social
  • Help shape how campaigns are conceived for social - not just adapted to it afterward
  • Partner with our social team to elevate content beyond "posting on the grid" into intentional, brand-right storytelling
  • Bring strategic input on how brand and social work together

You might be a fit if you
  • Have proven experience art-directing photo and video shoots, ideally in fashion, beauty, jewelry, or a premium lifestyle brand
  • Are genuinely passionate about social - how brand comes alive there and how to art-direct properly across the channel
  • Bring strong taste and judgment, and can protect the brand while moving fast
  • Are a self-starter who sees around corners and creates momentum
  • Can be on set and in our office as needed

Details
  • Type: Freelance / Contract, part-time
  • Hours: ~20-30 hours/week (flexes with production schedule)
  • Duration: ~1-2 months coverage, with potential to extend
  • Location: Hybrid - minimum 1-2 days/week in office, plus on-set days as needed
  • Reporting to: Head of Brand
  • Compensation: Commensurate with experience
