Job description

The Opportunity:

Tech is complicated, and we want someone to help us uncomplicate it for people who don’t have the time or expertise to dig through all the details. CNET is looking for a sharp editor to join our editorial team and support our coverage of services and software, focusing on services with a privacy and cybersecurity focus, including specific topics such as VPNs, antivirus, web hosting, data removal services and operating systems. In this role, you’ll edit guides, product reviews and roundups of the best products in a category. This role will primarily involve managing and editing staff and freelance writers, but will also provide opportunities to write stories. Things at CNET shift quickly and unexpectedly as we adapt to constantly evolving tech. The ideal candidate is comfortable with project management and able to quickly adapt to new strategies and processes. We offer a supportive, collaborative editorial team that takes our work (but not ourselves) seriously, plus regular coaching and mentorship. The senior editor will report to the managing editor of CNET’s Software and Services team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Edit reviews, buying guides and news reports from Services and Software writers

  • Assign and edit stories to freelancers

  • Provide structural, content and copy edits, and publish stories under deadline

  • Create exciting headlines and clear descriptions of complicated technology

  • Participate in monthly content planning for staff and freelance writers: help organize the team’s production and brainstorm ideas for new content and updates

  • Learn more about important tech categories and help people improve their digital privacy and security

Job Qualifications:
  • At least 2 years of editing experience, preferably in digital publishing

  • Experience evaluating online services, particularly ones focused on privacy and security

  • The ability to help readers cut through bombastic marketing and understand the practical benefits and drawbacks of services, and the ability to help other writers bring out those insights

  • An organized mind that has no problems cleanly tracking story ideas and publishes

  • A positive, collaborative attitude and the desire to work closely with colleagues beyond your immediate team

  • Growth mindset, eagerness for feedback

  • Experience with AP Stylebook or other in-house style guides

This role is fully remote, working with a team that is also remote and spread between Eastern and Pacific time zones.
