Freelance Fintech Software Engineer information

What is a freelance fintech software engineer?

Freelance Fintech Software Engineers are independent professionals who specialize in developing, maintaining, and improving software solutions for the financial technology (fintech) industry. They work on a contract or project basis with clients such as banks, startups, or payment companies, building secure, scalable applications like payment gateways, trading platforms, or digital wallets. Their responsibilities often include coding, testing, integrating APIs, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Freelance fintech engineers must stay updated with industry trends, security practices, and evolving technologies to meet the unique needs of financial clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance fintech software engineer, and why are they important?

A Freelance Fintech Software Engineer must have strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C#), a solid understanding of financial systems, and experience with secure software development, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with fintech-specific tools and frameworks (like blockchain platforms, payment APIs, or cloud platforms such as AWS), as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer or Certified FinTech Professional), is often required. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the ability to manage projects independently set top freelancers apart. These competencies are crucial for delivering robust, secure, and innovative solutions in the rapidly evolving fintech sector.

What is the difference between Freelance Fintech Software Engineer vs Fintech Software Developer?

AspectFreelance Fintech Software EngineerFintech Software Developer
CredentialsTypically requires relevant coding skills, experience, and sometimes certifications in finance or software developmentUsually holds a degree in computer science, software engineering, or related fields; certifications are common but not mandatory
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, often remote or freelance contractsEmployed by a company or fintech firm, working in office or remote teams
Employer & Industry UsageServes multiple clients across fintech projects, flexible engagementsWorks within a fintech company or startup, focused on product development

While both roles involve software development in fintech, a Freelance Fintech Software Engineer works independently on various projects, whereas a Fintech Software Developer is typically employed by a company to develop specific products or services.

How do freelance fintech software engineers typically collaborate with clients and cross-functional teams?

Freelance Fintech Software Engineers often work remotely, but strong collaboration is still essential. They usually communicate with clients, product managers, and designers through regular video meetings, project management tools, and messaging platforms to clarify requirements and provide updates. It’s common to participate in code reviews, agile sprints, and documentation processes to ensure seamless integration with existing systems and compliance with financial regulations. Clear communication and proactive feedback help maintain trust and deliver high-quality solutions, even when working independently.

Job description

Career Renew is recruiting for one of its clients a Software Engineer - Fintech - this is a hybrid role in Austin TX. Salary range: 140-180K USD base plus benefits plus equity.

We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join a fast-growing, AI-first fintech platform and help accelerate engineering execution. You'll be someone who thinks like an architect – designing scalable microservices, writing efficient SQL, and leveraging AI coding tools to ship production-grade code quickly. This is a high-impact role where every feature you build directly drives revenue in a highly regulated environment. You'll work closely with product owners to translate business requirements into engineering solutions, owning services end-to-end in a team of ~12 engineers.

What you will be doing

  • Designing and building scalable backend microservices – primarily in Go – that power a platform processing millions of daily communications and managing over $1B in debt

  • Writing and optimizing complex SQL queries, designing database schemas, and ensuring data integrity in a compliance-critical environment

  • Using AI coding tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude) daily to generate, validate, and ship production-grade code – setting architectural context so AI outputs meet quality standards

  • Collaborating with product owners to identify gaps in requirements, flush out edge cases, and turn business needs into clear engineering specs

  • Building AI-enabled features and agent workflows (MCP servers, LLM integrations, RAG patterns) to augment platform capabilities

Tech stack
Go (Golang), SQL, PostgreSQL, AWS (EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, CloudWatch), Linux, Kafka, Elasticsearch, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Git, Python
Requirements:
4+ years of experience in backend software engineering (Mandatory)
Built microservices end-to-end that read/write to databases at scale for systems handling high volume (e.g., millions of transactions/messages daily) (Mandatory)
Combined experience at both a large company and a startup (Nice-to have)
Experience in regulated industry (fintech/payments, healthcare) (Nice-to-have)
Degree in CS or related field (Nice-to-have)
Strong SQL skills: schema design, indexes, query optimization (Mandatory)
Proficient using AI coding tools (Cursor, Copilot, etc.) daily (Mandatory)
Experience with AI/LLM integration or MCP/agent development (Nice-to-have)
Can translate product requirements into engineering specs independently (Mandatory)
Why you should join us

• We build an AI-powered receivables platform that sends 3M+ texts daily and drives consumers to a self-serve payment portal — helping debt collection agencies go fully digital.

• Series A with $24M raised and 35x revenue growth last year. 22-person team growing 15% month over month with $1B+ in debt on the platform. This is a rocketship.

• You'll own scalable backend services in Go and build AI-enabled features that directly drive revenue in a high-volume regulated environment processing billions of transactions.
