How much do junior embedded engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for junior embedded engineer in Texas is $66,892.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $45,200.00 and $74,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a junior embedded engineer do?

A Junior Embedded Engineer assists in designing, developing, and testing embedded systems, which are specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger devices. They typically work with microcontrollers, firmware, and hardware interfaces, often writing code in languages like C or C++. Junior engineers collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, support product development, and improve system performance. Their role is crucial in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and IoT, where embedded systems are widely used.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior embedded engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded Engineer, you need a solid understanding of C/C++ programming, basic electronics, and embedded systems concepts, usually backed by a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with microcontrollers, hardware debugging tools (like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you adapt to project requirements and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure you can develop reliable embedded solutions, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and contribute effectively to engineering projects.

What are common challenges a junior embedded engineer faces when transitioning from academic projects to real-world embedded systems development?

Junior Embedded Engineers often find that real-world projects involve working with complex hardware constraints, strict deadlines, and cross-functional teams. Unlike academic projects, embedded systems in industry must meet rigorous reliability, safety, and performance standards, often with limited documentation. Adapting to debugging hardware issues, integrating with legacy code, and collaborating closely with hardware engineers and senior developers can be challenging but also provides valuable learning opportunities. Embracing a proactive approach to problem-solving and seeking mentorship within the team can greatly ease this transition.

Job description

Sr Embedded Engineer

Title: Sr Embedded Engineer

Location: Onsite in Houston, TX (not far from Katy area)
Position Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Sr Embedded Engineer to design, develop, and optimize firmware and embedded software for high-performance systems. The role focuses on end-to-end embedded solutions: architecting software, implementing robust firmware in C/C++, integrating with hardware subsystems (DDR4, NAND/NOR, UART, I2C, SPI, Ethernet), and validating systems on RTOS and Linux platforms. The ideal candidate will lead technical designs, troubleshoot complex issues using debug emulators and version control workflows, and mentor junior engineers to deliver reliable, production-quality products.
Key Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, and implement embedded firmware and software in C and C++ for resource-constrained and high-performance systems.
  • Lead software architecture and module design, producing clear specifications, APIs, and integration plans.
  • Develop device drivers and interfaces for microprocessors and peripherals (UART, I2C, SPI, Ethernet, NAND, NOR).
  • Integrate and validate memory subsystems, including DDR4 bring-up and tuning.
  • Port and develop reliably on RTOS and QNX environments; support Linux-based platforms when required.
  • Perform low-level debugging and root-cause analysis using hardware debug emulators, JTAG, and serial consoles.
  • Collaborate with hardware, QA, and systems teams to define test plans, design verification, and performance benchmarks.
  • Optimize code for memory footprint, determinism, and real-time constraints; apply data structures and multi-threading best practices.
  • Manage source code using Git, SVN, and other version control systems; maintain build and CI workflows in common IDEs and toolchains.
  • Drive troubleshooting and fault diagnosis across hardware-software boundaries; document findings and corrective actions.
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers, conduct design reviews, and promote engineering best practices and coding standards.
  • Participate in release planning, post-release support, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 7+ years of professional embedded firmware/software development experience, ideally on complex products.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++; proven ability to write clear, efficient, and maintainable code.
  • Experienced in embedded Linux and RTOS (QNX experience highly desirable).
  • Hands-on experience with microprocessors and peripherals: UART, I2C, SPI, Ethernet, NAND, NOR.
  • Experience with DDR4 bring-up, memory tuning, and related signal integrity considerations.
  • Solid understanding of software architecture, data structures, and multi-threaded programming.
  • Expert debugging and troubleshooting skills using emulators/JTAG, logic analyzers, and serial consoles.
  • Familiarity with IDEs, build systems, Git, SVN, and continuous integration workflows.
  • Experience with flash management, bootloaders, and storage interfaces.
  • Ability to collaborate across hardware and software teams, lead design reviews, and communicate complex concepts clearly.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality, production-ready embedded systems.
