What is a freelance accountant?

Freelance accountants are independent professionals who provide accounting services to individuals, small businesses, or organizations on a contract or project basis. Unlike in-house accountants, they are not full-time employees but work for multiple clients, offering services such as bookkeeping, tax preparation, financial reporting, and consulting. Freelance accountants typically set their own rates and schedules, allowing for flexible work arrangements. They often work remotely or on-site, depending on client needs, and may specialize in certain industries or accounting software.

What does a freelance accountant do?

The job duties of a freelance accountant involve working to assist clients with accounting tasks. Your responsibilities may vary based on the needs of each client and the area of your expertise. Some accountants specialize in preparing taxes and financial documents for businesses, or while others manage financial data, track variables, such as expenses, profits, and cash flow, for a company, and audit records for accuracy and compliance with reporting regulations. As an independent freelancer, you work on a contract basis, and you may work with more than one client at a time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Accountant, you need a strong grasp of accounting principles, financial reporting, and tax regulations, typically backed by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications such as CPA or ACCA. Proficiency in accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, and familiarity with cloud-based financial tools, is crucial. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for building client relationships and handling multiple projects independently. These skills ensure accurate financial management, client trust, and sustainable business growth in a competitive freelance environment.

How do freelance accountants typically manage multiple client projects and deadlines simultaneously?

Freelance accountants often juggle several clients at once, each with their own reporting requirements and deadlines. Successful freelancers use project management tools, strict scheduling, and clear communication to stay organized and ensure timely delivery of financial statements, tax filings, and advisory work. Establishing transparent processes for document collection and client communication is also key to minimizing errors and meeting expectations. Building strong client relationships and setting clear boundaries helps prevent scope creep and ensures a manageable workload.

About the Role

Valnet is looking for an ambitious Talent Acquisition Lead to join our tech team on-site at our Ville Saint-Laurent HQ. In this role, you will take full ownership of the freelance ecosystem across some of our tech brands—including Pocket-lint, MakeUseOf, How-To Geek, Android Police, or XDA.

You will be directly responsible for shaping and executing your recruitment vision. Our lean team structure means you won't be confined to a rigid box; you will wear different hats, drive multi-brand initiatives, and continuously expand your skill set in ways that directly impact the business. If you have a genuine passion for tech, digital media, and building top-tier contributor networks, this role is for you!

Key ResponsibilitiesTalent Acquisition & Recruitment
  • Manage full-cycle recruiting for remote contributors, including posting job listings, screening applicants, and scheduling editor interviews.
  • Maintain active talent pipelines to fill incoming content coverage needs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all candidate communications and inquiries.
Onboarding & Contributor Support
  • Facilitate contributor onboarding: issue offer agreements, set up platform access, send welcome materials, and track post-training milestones.
  • Serve as the daily point of contact for the remote contributor network, addressing Slack/email queries regarding contracts, platform tools, and workflows.
  • Monitor contributor retention and engagement, conducting routine check-ins and following up with inactive writers.
Payroll & Offboarding Administration
  • Prepare semi-monthly payments across the tech brands, calculating bonuses, training payments, expenses, and invoices.
  • Coordinate with accounting to set up contributor payment methods (PayPal, Payoneer, Bank Wire).
  • Manage offboarding processes, including revoking system permissions and calculating final/prorated payouts.
Operations & Documentation
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation, active contributor master lists, and internal tracking sheets across all brands.
  • Continuously refine recruitment, onboarding, and operational templates to streamline workflows.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Projects
  • Partner with Editorial, Legal, and Accounting teams to support organizational shifts, policy updates, and system implementations.

  • Assist with special ad-hoc projects and change-management initiatives as needed.

Requirements
  • Location: Must be able to work in-office from our Ville Saint-Laurent location.
  • Experience: Proven experience in talent acquisition, recruitment coordination, or HR operations (experience managing high-volume freelance or remote networks is a strong plus).
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Tech-Savvy: Comfortable navigating ATS tools, Google Workspace, Excel, Slack, and CMS platforms.
  • Ownership Mindset: Highly organized with a strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple brands independently.
What We Offer
  • Strategic Autonomy: Enjoy full ownership of your recruitment strategy with the freedom to innovate, test new ideas, and execute efficiently.
  • Multi-Faceted Growth: With a focus on agility rather than corporate hierarchy, you will wear different hats, gain exposure across multiple departments, and expand your professional footprint.
  • Competitive Package: Comprehensive health benefits and competitive compensation.
  • Collaborative Environment: A fast-paced, in-office team environment in Ville Saint-Laurent.
  • Global Scope: Direct influence over the contributor rosters that fuel content read by tens of millions of tech enthusiasts worldwide.
