What is franchise consulting?

Franchise consulting is a professional service where consultants help individuals or organizations evaluate, buy, sell, or develop franchise businesses. Franchise consultants guide clients through the process of selecting suitable franchise opportunities, understanding franchise agreements, and navigating legal and financial requirements. They may also support existing businesses in franchising their operations or expanding their franchise network. The goal is to provide expert advice and resources to ensure successful franchise ownership and growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a franchise consultant?

To thrive as a Franchise Consultant, you need a solid understanding of business operations, franchise models, and market research, often supported by a degree in business or related fields. Familiarity with CRM software, financial analysis tools, and franchise disclosure documents is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, negotiation abilities, and effective communication make consultants stand out in building trust with clients and guiding them through complex decisions. These skills are crucial for helping clients make informed franchise investments and ensuring successful franchise development and growth.

What are some common challenges faced by franchise consultants, and how can new consultants overcome them?

Franchise consultants often encounter challenges such as understanding diverse business models, managing client expectations, and staying current with industry trends. New consultants may initially find it difficult to match prospective franchisees with the right opportunities, but building strong research skills and developing a robust network within the franchise community can help. Collaborating closely with both franchisors and clients, as well as participating in ongoing education and industry events, can enhance a consultant’s effectiveness and credibility.

How do franchise consultants get paid?

Franchise consultants typically earn fees through a combination of retainer fees, hourly rates, or commissions based on the value of franchise deals they facilitate. Some may also receive performance bonuses or success fees once a franchise agreement is signed. Compensation structures vary depending on the consultant and client agreement.

How to become a franchise consulting?

To become a franchise consultant, individuals typically gain experience in sales, marketing, or business development, and develop knowledge of franchising systems. Earning certifications such as the Franchise Management Certificate can enhance credibility, and strong communication skills are essential for advising clients. Building a network within the franchise industry and understanding legal and financial aspects also support success in this role.

Job description

The Franchise Business Consultant (FBC) supports a portfolio of Dunkin' franchisees within emerging and growth markets. This role combines the strategic business consulting responsibilities of a traditional FBC with a hands‑on operational support approach. The consultant partners closely with franchisees to drive brand standards, operational excellence, profitability, guest experience, and sustainable network growth. Unlike a traditional consultant role, this position requires deeper restaurant‑level engagement, frequent in‑store assessments, and proactive coaching to support developing operators and markets that require increased operational guidance and growth acceleration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build strong consultative relationships with franchisees and serve as a trusted operational advisor.
  • Conduct in‑depth restaurant operational reviews, identify opportunities, and create action plans to improve performance.
  • Drive compliance with Dunkin' brand standards, food safety, training, and operational execution.
  • Provide hands‑on coaching and support to franchisees, operators, and managers to improve day‑to‑day operations.
  • Analyze sales, profitability, guest metrics, labor, and operational KPIs to guide business improvement decisions.
  • Lead Franchise Business Reviews and annual business planning processes.
  • Partner with franchisees to prepare for new unit openings, remodels, and market expansion initiatives.
  • Support emerging markets by increasing operational readiness, strengthening franchise capability, and improving growth momentum.
  • Evaluate competitive activity, market dynamics, and development opportunities to help franchisees maximize market share.
  • Collaborate with development, training, construction, and marketing teams to support franchisee success.
  • Monitor the execution of local and regional marketing initiatives and operational rollouts.
  • Conduct frequent restaurant visits and provide follow‑up accountability on improvement plans.
Required Experience & Qualifications
  • 5+ years of multi‑unit restaurant operations leadership experience.
  • Experience managing multiple locations at the district, area, regional, or franchise support level.
  • Strong understanding of restaurant financial performance, operations, food safety, and labor management.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and influence franchisees and operators without direct authority.
  • Experience supporting new restaurant openings, remodels, or market expansion initiatives.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent restaurant leadership experience considered.
  • Ability to travel 75‑80%.
Key Competencies

Operational expertise, franchise consulting, business acumen, analytical problem solving, relationship building, influencing skills, coaching and development, project management, adaptability, and growth mindset.
