Job description

Vessel Advisors is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Fractional Controller to provide expert financial oversight and management for nonprofit organizations. This part-time (contract) role is designed for an experienced accounting professional who understands the unique financial and regulatory challenges faced by nonprofit entities. As a Fractional Controller, you will be responsible for overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and internal controls to ensure the organization operates efficiently and maintains financial integrity. You will work closely with nonprofit leadership to support strategic financial decision-making and enhance operational effectiveness. This part-time, flexible role allows you to leverage your nonprofit accounting expertise while making a meaningful impact in the mission-driven sector. Responsibilities
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and reports in compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accuracy of financial information.
  • Coordinate audit processes and liaise with external auditors.
  • Support grant management and reporting requirements.
  • Advise nonprofit leadership on financial best practices, compliance issues, and strategic planning.
  • Ensure compliance with IRS regulations and other relevant nonprofit laws.

For this specific client, their Finance Manager is retiring and need someone to come in on a fractional capacity for 2-3 days per week to assist with the transition. This organization has very complicated financials with nursing revenues that vary by client, by nursing care, etc. And there is Medicare. They also have numerous restricted gifts/endowments. Lastly, they utilize GAAP accounting for taxes, but have not yet instituted operating financial statements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of controller experience with nonprofits, and 10+ total years of experience at the controller level
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with nonprofit financial software and accounting systems.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret financial reports for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a remote or flexible work environment.
  • Commitment to integrity, transparency, and mission-driven work.
