What is fractional leadership?

Fractional leadership refers to hiring experienced executives, such as CEOs, CFOs, or COOs, on a part-time or contract basis instead of as full-time employees. These leaders typically work with multiple organizations, providing high-level strategic guidance and management expertise without the long-term commitment or cost of a full-time hire. This approach is popular with startups and small to mid-sized companies who need executive leadership but lack the resources to bring someone on board full-time. Fractional leaders can help organizations scale efficiently, implement best practices, and drive growth during critical periods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fractional leader?

To thrive as a Fractional Leader, you need a proven track record in executive leadership, strategic planning, and operational management, often supported by significant industry experience or advanced degrees. Familiarity with business management tools such as CRM platforms, project management software, and financial analysis systems is commonly expected. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and the ability to quickly build trust with diverse teams are standout soft skills in this role. These qualities are crucial for delivering rapid impact, guiding organizations through transitions, and achieving key objectives within limited engagement periods.

How does a fractional leader integrate with an existing executive team, and what are common challenges during this process?

A Fractional Leader typically joins an organization on a part-time or contract basis to provide executive-level guidance, often during periods of transition or rapid growth. Integrating into an established leadership team requires quickly building trust, understanding company culture, and aligning with existing strategies while bringing an outside perspective. Common challenges include balancing influence with limited time on-site, navigating pre-existing team dynamics, and prioritizing initiatives that deliver immediate impact. Open communication, defined objectives, and regular check-ins can help ensure smooth collaboration and effective results.

What is the difference between Fractional Leadership vs Part-Time Executive?

AspectFractional LeadershipPart-Time Executive
CredentialsSenior executives with extensive industry experienceSenior-level professionals with executive background
Work EnvironmentConsulting-based, project-focused, flexible engagementEmbedded within the organization, working on specific hours
UsageUsed by organizations seeking strategic leadership without full-time commitmentUsed by companies needing executive support part-time, often in startups or small firms

Both roles involve experienced professionals providing leadership, but Fractional Leadership typically offers flexible, project-based consulting, while Part-Time Executives work within the organization on a scheduled basis. The choice depends on the company's needs for strategic guidance versus operational involvement.

Klaritee

Scottsdale, AZ โ€ข On-site

Full-time

This job post hasย expired today.ย Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

Fractional Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) โ€“ 3 to 6 Month Engagement

Location: Remote (Scottsdale preferred but not required)

Seniority: Executive Consultant / Fractional Leadership

Reporting to: Founder & President

Compensation: Competitive monthly retainer, commensurate with senior fractional executive experience.

Klaritee is building a deterministic intelligence platform with enterprise, governance, and national-level safety applications. As the company enters a high-velocity build phase, we are seeking a Fractional Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to architect, establish, and operationalize the foundational systems that will support our executive team, engineering organization, governance structures, and long-term institutional scale.

This role is ideal for a seasoned operational leader who has repeatedly built early-stage infrastructure for complex or regulated technology environments. You will design and implement Klariteeโ€™s internal operating system from the ground up, ensuring clarity, cohesion, compliance, and readiness for rapid executive expansion. This is a short-term but high-impact engagement, and the work you do will define the structural foundation of the company moving forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build Klariteeโ€™s foundational business infrastructure, including operational systems, internal processes, and cross-department workflows.
  • Establish documentation and reporting structures, administrative policies, and organizational clarity.
  • Set up onboarding systems, HR/people operations pathways, contractor/employee processes, and compliance baselines.
  • Develop internal communication cadences, meeting structures, and cross-executive coordination channels.
  • Support initial alignment between CSO/EVP, CCOโ€‘SVP, CTO, and CFO, as the executive team forms.
  • Coordinate with legal, financial, and governance partners to ensure clean operational integration.
  • Build the operational scaffolding that the long-term full-time CAO will inherit.
  • Identify operational gaps and implement scalable systems that remove burden from the founder and executive team.
  • Evaluate tooling, vendor platforms, workflow automation, and operational readiness for enterpriseโ€‘grade growth.

Ideal Background

A strong candidate will have experience such as:

  • Former CAO, COO, Chief of Staff, or VP of Operations in an early-stage or highโ€‘complexity tech company.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a company from 0 โ†’ 1 operationally, creating clarity from ambiguity.
  • Experience building processes for teams working across engineering, legal, finance, and governance.
  • Fluency in administrative operations, compliance, HR structure, and multiโ€‘department coordination.
  • Comfortable working directly with the founder and acting as the operational architect of the company.
  • Exceptional organizational intelligence, documentation discipline, and systems thinking.

This role requires someone who thrives in environments where the operational foundation needs to be created rapidly, cleanly, and with long-term scalability in mind.

  • Fractional engagement, typically 10โ€“25 hours per week.
  • Expected duration: 3 to 6 months.
  • Direct access to the founder and executive team.
  • High autonomy with clearly defined outcomes.
  • Potential to advise on hiring the permanent fullโ€‘time CAO.

Why Join Klaritee (Fractional Role)

This is an opportunity to design the operating environment for a company creating a new category of deterministic intelligence. You will:

  • Build the internal architecture before scale begins.
  • Create clarity and structure for a rapidly forming executive team.
  • Ensure operational readiness for enterprise, governance, and safetyโ€‘aligned workstreams.
  • Leave behind a longโ€‘lasting operational foundation that shapes the companyโ€™s future.

Your work will directly influence Klariteeโ€™s structural integrity as it enters a pivotal phase of growth.
