Fractional Ceo information

How much do fractional CEOs make?

Fractional CEOs typically earn between $5,000 and $20,000 per month, depending on the company's size, industry, and the scope of responsibilities. Their compensation often includes a combination of retainer fees and performance-based incentives, and they usually work on a part-time or project basis for multiple clients simultaneously.

What is a fractional CEO?

A Fractional CEO is a part-time or contract-based executive who provides high-level leadership and strategic direction to a company without being a full-time employee. Typically engaged by startups, small businesses, or companies in transition, they offer expertise in scaling operations, improving profitability, and guiding organizations through growth or change. This role is cost-effective for businesses that need experienced leadership but cannot afford or do not require a full-time CEO.

How do you become a fractional CEO?

To become a fractional CEO, individuals typically need extensive executive experience, strong leadership skills, and a deep understanding of business strategy. Gaining relevant industry knowledge, building a professional network, and demonstrating success in previous leadership roles are essential steps. Certifications or advanced education in business management can also enhance credibility in this flexible leadership position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fractional CEO position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fractional CEO, you should possess extensive executive leadership experience, strategic business acumen, and a successful track record in driving organizational growth, preferably with a relevant degree such as an MBA. Familiarity with business management platforms (like CRM and ERP systems), financial forecasting tools, and occasionally certifications in executive coaching or lean management are highly valued. Exceptional interpersonal skills, adaptability, and the ability to quickly build trust with stakeholders set top candidates apart. These skills are critical for quickly diagnosing business needs, providing agile leadership, and implementing impactful changes within short, part-time engagements.

What are some common expectations or challenges faced by fractional CEOs in their engagements?

Fractional CEOs are typically expected to make a significant impact within a limited timeframe, often juggling multiple clients with distinct business models and cultures. A key challenge is quickly building trust and credibility while implementing strategic changes that align with the organization's goals. Additionally, Fractional CEOs must stay flexible, adapting their leadership style to fit varying team dynamics and business needs. Success in this role often depends on strong time management, superior communication, and the ability to deliver measurable results in a part-time capacity.

Job description

FRACTIONAL CFO | Strategic Financial Leadership | $130,000–$190,000 Annualized DOE

About the Company & Opportunity
Our client is seeking a Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide hands-on financial leadership, strategic insight, and operational guidance on a part-time or project basis. This role is ideal for a senior finance executive who thrives in dynamic environments—helping small to mid-sized organizations strengthen their accounting infrastructure, streamline reporting, and prepare for sustainable growth.

The Fractional CFO will partner closely with ownership and senior leadership to deliver executive-level financial oversight without the full-time cost commitment, offering high-value expertise across forecasting, budgeting, and long-term planning.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out
• High-impact, flexible leadership role with schedule flexibility (10–20 hours per week).
• Partner directly with executive leadership to implement strategic initiatives.
• Opportunity to modernize financial systems and mentor accounting teams.
• Competitive compensation and ability to work remotely or hybrid, depending on client needs.

Key Responsibilities
• Oversee and guide accounting and finance operations, including month-end close, forecasting, and cash flow management.
• Lead the preparation and analysis of financial statements to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
• Provide strategic insight to executive leadership—budgeting, forecasting, KPI reporting, and margin improvement.
• Evaluate and enhance internal controls, policies, and financial systems.
• Collaborate with external auditors, lenders, and investors as needed.
• Support mergers, acquisitions, or strategic initiatives with modeling and due diligence analysis.
• Mentor accounting staff and help strengthen department efficiency and reporting accuracy.

Core Competencies & Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including prior CFO or Controller-level experience.
• Strong background in GAAP compliance, cash flow management, and strategic planning.
• Proficient in ERP/accounting systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar).
• Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to operate in both tactical and advisory capacities.

Compensation: Annualized salary equivalent of $100,000–$170,000, depending on scope, structure, and client needs
Location: St. Joseph County
Engagement Type: Fractional / Contract
