What is a founding account executive?

Founding Account Executives are among the first sales hires at a startup or early-stage company. They play a crucial role in building the initial customer base, developing sales processes, and shaping the company's go-to-market strategy. Unlike standard Account Executives, Founding Account Executives often work closely with founders, contribute to product feedback, and help define the company’s sales culture. Their work is essential for establishing early revenue streams and setting the foundation for future growth.

What unique challenges and opportunities can a founding account executive expect in an early-stage startup environment?

As a Founding Account Executive at an early-stage startup, you'll often work in a fast-paced setting where processes are still being built, requiring flexibility and a proactive mindset. You'll have the opportunity to shape the sales strategy, influence product development by sharing customer feedback, and work closely with both leadership and cross-functional teams. Challenges may include managing ambiguity, wearing multiple hats, and building a customer base from the ground up. However, this role offers significant growth potential, visibility, and the chance to directly impact the company's success and culture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding account executive, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Founding Account Executive, you need a proven track record in B2B sales, deep product knowledge, and the ability to build and manage a sales pipeline, often supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, sales enablement tools, and, occasionally, certifications in sales methodologies are important. Outstanding communication, entrepreneurial drive, and adaptability make someone stand out in this early-stage, high-growth role. These skills are crucial for driving revenue, shaping sales processes, and establishing a strong customer base in a startup environment.

What is the difference between Founding Account Executive vs Sales Development Representative?

Required SkillsSales expertise, negotiation, product knowledgeCommunication, prospecting, research skills
Work EnvironmentDirect client interaction, sales meetings, negotiationsResearch, outreach, lead qualification

While both roles are vital in sales, the Founding Account Executive focuses on closing deals and building client relationships, often in early-stage companies. The Sales Development Representative primarily generates and qualifies leads to support the sales pipeline. Understanding these differences helps candidates target the right roles based on their skills and career goals.

Job description

Founding Account Executive About Quinn

Quinn is the workforce intelligence platform for the 2.7B blue collar and deskless workers. We help companies understand what their workforce actually knows, close skill gaps, and are expanding into the coordination layer for internal workforce operations.

In the past ~6 months, we've grown from ~$100K to over $1M ARR across 65+ customers. Average contract value has increased every quarter, with over 400% growth in the last three quarters, including multiple six-figure contracts signed in the past few weeks.

Quinn was founded by Ben Anderson, who previously built Amino to 20M+ users, and Arlen Marmel, who helped scale Crunchyroll through its $1B+ acquisition. We are backed by a16z Speedrun, Bessemer, Primary, and Field Ventures.

About the Role

We are hiring a Founding Account Executive to help drive Quinn's next phase of growth.

This is a high ownership, full cycle role where you will run deals end to end — from first conversation through close — while working closely with the founders to refine our sales motion.

You will inherit strong momentum and a growing pipeline, while also taking agency over sourcing and developing new enterprise opportunities, partnerships, and expansion within existing customers.

This role is best suited for someone who wants to operate as both a closer and a builder, with meaningful influence over how Quinn sells and scales.

What You'll Do
  • Own the full sales cycle across mid market and enterprise opportunities, from discovery through close.
  • Take ownership over high value opportunities, including six figure deals, and drive them forward with urgency and structure.
  • Source and develop new strategic opportunities, including partnerships and outbound enterprise motion.
  • Expand existing customers through upsell and multi product adoption.
  • Use in-person engagement, including industry events and on-site visits with prospects and customers, as a high leverage tool to generate pipeline, accelerate deals, and drive expansion.
  • Partner directly with founders to refine messaging, pricing, and positioning.
  • Help define and operationalize Quinn's sales playbook.
  • Leverage AI and tooling to improve efficiency and conversion rates.
  • Provide structured feedback to product and marketing based on customer conversations.
  • Contribute to early hiring and onboarding as the team grows.
Who You Are
  • 4 to 8 years of experience in B2B SaaS sales.
  • Proven track record closing mid market or enterprise deals, ideally including six figure contracts.
  • Comfortable owning deals end to end, with the ability to both generate and close opportunities.
  • Strong in discovery, business case development, and navigating complex buying processes.
  • High agency and accountability, with a bias toward action.
  • Excited to work directly with founders in a fast moving environment.
  • Interested in selling into operational, blue collar, or field service industries.
  • Bonus: Experience with vertical SaaS, AI products, or workforce or operational tools. Experience building new sales motions or entering new segments.
Why This Role
  • Direct access to founders and real influence on GTM strategy.
  • Strong existing momentum with increasing deal sizes and enterprise traction.
  • Opportunity to own and shape the enterprise motion from an early stage.
  • Clear path to leadership as the team scales.
  • Competitive compensation with meaningful equity upside.
