Our ideal candidate for this Staff Accountant role is a motivated, early-career accountant eager to build a strong foundation, while supporting both the publication and corporate finance teams at Forum Communications Company. This position provides hands-on experience across a variety of functions, while offering exposure to operational accounting, financial analysis, and process improvement initiatives across multiple departments.
This is a full-time opening, with standard Monday-Friday daytime hours. The role will begin primarily onsite in Fargo, ND to support onboarding, training, and collaboration, with potential hybrid eligibility based on performance, proficiency, and departmental needs.
Essential Functions
  • Maintain and reconcile balance sheet and general ledger accounts
  • Prepare and reconcile fixed asset reports, depreciation schedules, and related accounts
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare financial statements and supporting schedules for assigned profit centers
  • Develop financial analyses and management reports
  • Perform monthly balance sheet, income statement, and budget variance analyses
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, annual audits, and tax return preparation
  • Investigate and resolve account discrepancies and audit findings
  • Support continuous improvement of accounting processes, procedures, and automation opportunities, and use resources such as Microsoft Business Central, Excel, and Power Automate to enhance reporting and workflow efficiency
  • Collaborate with newspaper, broadcast, commercial print, and corporate finance teams on accounting and reporting initiatives

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
  • Zero to two years of accounting experience preferred
  • Previous internship experience in accounting or finance is a plus, regardless of industry
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, and the ability to learn new systems and technologies with ease
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Eagerness to learn and grow within an accounting and finance environment

Expected compensation for this role is between $50,000 and $55,000/year, based on qualifications and experience.
