Job description

Grounds Technician
Department: Facilities Management
Reports To: Facilities Manager / Grounds Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Location: Show Low Unified School District
Calendar: 260 days, 8 hours per day




Position Summary
The Grounds Technician is responsible for maintaining the safety, cleanliness, and appearance of district grounds and outdoor facilities. This position performs landscaping, irrigation maintenance, equipment operation, snow removal, and general grounds upkeep to ensure district properties remain safe, functional, and visually appealing for students, staff, and the community.
Depending on experience, the Grounds Technician may assist with advanced irrigation repairs, grounds improvement projects, and training of new staff. 

Essential Job Functions
 

Landscaping and Grounds Care

  • Maintain lawns, flower beds, shrubs, and trees across district campuses.
  • Perform mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, fertilizing, and mulching.
  • Plant seasonal flowers and landscaping, and remove weeds or invasive species.
  • Monitor plant health and address soil, turf, or landscape issues.


Irrigation and Water Systems

  • Operate and maintain irrigation systems to ensure proper water distribution.
  • Inspect irrigation systems for leaks, malfunctions, or blockages.
  • Repair sprinkler heads, valves, and irrigation lines as needed.
  • Adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions and seasonal needs.


Grounds Maintenance and Cleanup

  • Remove litter, debris, leaves, and other materials from grounds, sidewalks, and parking areas.
  • Maintain fences, gates, benches, walkways, and other outdoor structures.
  • Inspect playgrounds, athletic fields, and outdoor facilities to ensure safe conditions.
  • Prepare and maintain athletic fields, including mowing, lining, and general upkeep.


Snow Removal and Seasonal Care

  • Remove snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, and building entrances.
  • Apply salt or ice melt to prevent hazardous conditions.
  • Winterize irrigation systems and prepare grounds equipment for seasonal changes.


Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, tractors, and snow removal equipment.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition.


Safety and Compliance

  • Follow OSHA safety standards and district policies.
  • Properly handle fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides according to district guidelines.
  • Identify and address safety hazards on school grounds.


Collaboration and Support

  • Communicate and coordinate work with custodial and maintenance staff.
  • Report grounds issues or safety concerns to the Facilities Manager or Grounds Supervisor.
  • Assist with setup and preparation of outdoor areas for school events.

Minimum Qualifications
 

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
 

Experience

  • Experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, irrigation systems, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working in a school district, municipal, or public facility environment is desirable.


Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of landscaping practices and lawn care.
  • Ability to operate landscaping equipment and grounds machinery.
  • Basic knowledge of irrigation systems and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining safe and attractive grounds.

Certifications

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Pesticide applicator certification preferred or ability to obtain.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate power tools and heavy equipment safely.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily outdoor work environment.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for events, snow removal, or emergency repairs.
  • May require on-call availability during inclement weather.
