Job description

The Tree Maintenance worker operates under the supervision of The Tree Maintenance Foreman. This position is responsible for performing basic tree maintenance, pruning, removing and caring for City of Augusta trees as directed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operates a variety of maintenance equipment, including skid steer loader (Bobcat) trencher, water tank truck, aerial truck, brush chipper, stump grinder, chain saws, and other related equipment as training allows.
  • Ensures adherence to current safe work practices and procedures related to tree maintenance and removal activities including electrical hazard awareness.
  • Rigs rope for tree removal, and trims trees.
  • Responds to emergencies as needed.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Education: High School diploma or GED
Experience: One (1) year of experience in tree climbing, rope rigging for tree removal, maintaining, trimming, and caring for trees and relevant equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Safe Work practices.
  • Knowledge of purposes of general construction tools and equipment and ability to use them in the area of work assigned.
  • Knowledge of Preventative Maintenance techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic knots and ability to tie them including but not limited to: bowline, Blake's hitch, taut line hitch, and clove hitch.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures including electrical hazard awareness and aerial rescue.
  • Knowledge of hazardous chemicals, herbicides and fertilizers and the ability to use them safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of work zone traffic control and warning signs.
  • Ability to work out of an aerial bucket.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment used in tree maintenance.

Licensing:
Must possess a valid state operator/driver's license for the type vehicle operated with good driving history. This position does require staff call up in an emergency situation and travel from office to other locations.
Performance Aptitudes:
  • Physical Abilities: Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to such adverse environmental conditions as high pressure gas & water lines, insects, poisonous plants, animals, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, electric currents, disease, raw sewage, blood, or pathogenic substances.
